On this project we had to select a hardback book of whatever subject we wanted...then...whatever the book was about ... we had to take and create a sculpture from the book, using only the book and glue. We could do whatever we wanted to the book..except any other materials except the glue.

Here is mine:

I just couldn't make myself tear up any of my old hardbacks, so I went to the flea market and bought one lol..turns out I probably should have checked it out before I did it...as the one I used was a misprint lol. This cover was normally printed on the softcover version..and on mine it was the hardback...oh well.

Beauty, by Bill Wallace

I took the pages and traced out the design I wanted to use, then glued all the pages together, then cut them out. To get them smooth along the edges..I used a Dremmel.

Thats awesome, I just could never imagine before I saw this that a teacher would assign their students to tear apart books.

lol..Now, who would want this thing..except for maybe my teacher or my mom . :p

Here's another of my projects. We had to make a chair out of cardboard and glue..then we could paint and upholster it if we wanted. I painted mine silver and upholstered it with pvc material.

you'll have to pardon me...lol I didn't wear makeup to work that day lol.

lol..it's actually quite sturdy. Only thing I wouldn't do is lean back on it with all my weight, I mean....it is only glued, not nailed or anything lol.

I'm gonna keep it in my office to sit my purse and jacket on..

These are basically to trigger you immagination, as that is a big part of what our job will entail once we start working in this field. 90% of designers take stuff that is already created and make "new" things out of them..to try and give their clients a "unique" one of a kind product. When you pay as much for a design as designers charge..you don't want someone down the street to be able to go to H2G and buy it off the floor.

Another project: Conceal/Reveal

Take 10 or more letters/numbers and create a line drawing with them on a piece of bristol board. (should look like stenciled letters, stencil is not allowed).

After the design was complete, you had to erase half the lines...then draw the exposed lines over to meet anotherline (so there are no gaps). Make several copies of this design.

Use Black, White, and Grey paint to color in the desired areas in equal amounts.

Conceal_Reveal001a.jpg

Gradate all shapes using black, white, and greys.

Conceal_Reveal002a.jpg

Make 65% of the picture dark and 35% light.

...I'm in the process of making color variations now...it's alot more complicated lol.

Omg -- that book -- "Beauty"... I'd totally forgotten about it till I saw that picture of yours! It was one of my favorite books as a kid!! Wow thanks for reminding me haha. I think I may have to hit a few used bookstores and see if I can find a copy!!

... And very cool project, BTW.
