school or shaol

Although you can use both I prefer shoal as SCHOOL (arrrg!!!!) reminds me too much of boring lessons and HOMEWORK

On the other hand, you could look at it the other way - and say that calling a group of fish a 'school', means that you can associate the boring lessons and homework with something that makes you happy

Both. It really depends on which I had read last or something of that sort. Normally I use schools, though, since that is what I say, along with the "join our school" greeting I have.

Interesting, I always heard that 'school' meant a group of fish of the same species, and that 'shoal' was a group of fish of several different species.
For example, a school of tetras, or a shoal of tetras, silver dollars, and rasboras.

I usually just say school though since I hear it more often.

I always say "school," as in "A cory is a schooling fish," which I've only said about a million times since I've been posting on the forum!

I had thought it was a cultural difference, since I learned at an early age that fish swim in schools. While I didn't take much note of it, I thought perhaps it was a British thing to say "shoal."

I haven't read through the replies, so I don't know if this is a repeat. A magazine I read recently said in a school the fish actually "swim as one" if that makes sense and in a shoal they just like to be around each other, not necessarily all swimming together. Also it said a school should be at least 12.
