i much prefer the look of sand though as you say cleaning is a pain, and gaseous bubbles can form in the sand bed if you've not got anything turning it over regularly like cories etc...

i've gone for a black very fine gravel in my trop tank, which i think has the benefits of both.
its fine enough for cories to run through, but doesn't lift up off of the bottom so easily when doing water changes and also you don't get the trapped noxious gas developing.
