The powering will reduce the ammount of light being able to penetrate to the moss, and will caurse it to die off Also, eventualy the remaining moss will eventualy grow over the sand, resulting in a loss of effect.
I agree 100 percent with what rabbut said. The said will cause the balls to grow deformed, if they grow at all. Remove the sand from them if you want them to live
I think you might be able to get away with it as long as you rotate them regularly, shaking off the sand and re-powdering a different side. The base of mine don't die off despite having no light on them, but then I do roll them around a bit every week during water changes. They won't grow fast enough to grow over the sand. If you powder the front half and leave the back half free then they'll still get some light.
Why not experiment with one, comparing it to the others over a month or two, then let us know how you get on?
