Sand Cleaning Help?

Hi I am new to this forum but I have kept various tropical fish for the last three years, but my cousen has now got herself a tropical tank and has come to me for advice on cleaning it.

Now for mine I have a siphon type cleaner but she has sand in her tank and not gravel so my siphon would just suck it all up. I was wondering if there is different equipment for cleaning sand or if there are any special methods to doing it

Any help or advice would be greatly apreciated

Use the syphon, but hold it a couple of inches off the top of the sand and create a swirling patten, this should lift of the lighter debris, but the sand should stay seated.
