Sand Amounts

I have sand in one of my tanks which I only made to a depth of about half an inch thinking it would be easier that way.

I've been considering adding more to make it deeper, but what's a good depth to have?

What are the pro's and cons with having deep sand substrate?

Also does sand have any effect similar to gravel with regard to useful bacteria?

The cons are eventually it will wear your filter down (the impellor) and clog the filter up

I am about to sort out my new tank, I've got enough sand to have somewhere between 1-1.5" depth...I think going above 1.5" is a no-no...

If the sand is deep enough to hold down whatever plants you have, there's very little point making it thicker. It looks about the same and takes up water space.
