I have some lake malawi cichlids and was wondering if you can put in salt as a general tonic and if so would a plec be ok with this?

They can handle a bit of salt, but all they really need as a tonic is clean water. The pleco depends on the species.

Personally, I have never used salt in my tanks and I never had issues. I do use epsom salt which is not the same as NaCl.

Thanks. I may just avoid the salt then. What is the difference between epsom salts and normal salt? ????

Epsoms salt is a method people use to raise the General Hardness of the water.

Exactly. Since my tap water is only pH7.2/KH3/GH4, I add baking soda and epsom salt when I do water changes... I get pH7.8/KH8/GH8 after adding the right amount of these chemicals.
