Can rummy nose tetras be kept with neon tetras?

I have a 29g, cycled, heavily planted tank with 8 neon tetras.

My water parameters are the following: Ammonia: 0ppm, Nitrite: 0ppm Nitrate: 6-8ppm, ph: 7.6-7.8.

My GH is 159 mg/L or 9.3 grains of calcium carbonate per gallon. That’s what my water providers website said. Not sure how that translates?

I was looking at adding a shoal of rummy nose tetras to my tetra tank which has neon tetras and so far found nothing that says they do not get along.

Great news!

I’m about to call my LFS to see if they would be willing to exchange some cherry shrimp/Anacharis for some rummy nose tetras! :)

Just called...

The owner said he didn’t need either at the moment, but I could keep checking in with him. :/

A little bummed about that, but hey, it’s life.

I’ll just check in with him next month to see if he needs them then.

My concern here with rummynose would be the tank size. A 3-foot tank is really minimum for this species, as it like to swim. It also needs a good sized group, at least 11-12, but will always be better with twice that. In a 4-foot or 5-foot tank this is a lovely tetra in a group of 20-30. When I moved last May I re-homed my group of 12 that I had had for several years, because I was not bringing my 4-foot tanks.

Ok, thanks.

Then do you suggest I get more neon tetras? I also feel like my tank is “over planted” as in there isn’t enough room for them to really swim around. Is this possible? I’ll upload a picture of it in a bit.

The space would be an issue for fish that are more active, like rummynose, but quieter fish like neons are fine. As for more neons, that is up to you; a group of 8 is a decent number, you could add half a dozen more, just remember that is limiting other species. And you might want other species too.

I might look into those. What about silver tip tetras?

From my profile of this species (Silvertip): A lively and peaceful shoaling fish that must be kept in groups of at least six but preferably more. Needs room to swim, and prefers a slight current comparable to its habitat streams, so longer tanks are preferable.

Ok, I’ll see what my LFS has in stock and then get back to you. Thanks for your help so far. :)
