USA,
My parents said that I can get the 75 gallon tank. But there are some things that suck.

1. it is my birthday in 2 weeks, and they wont even get it for a pressent, even though there is nothing else I want.

2. They told me I cant do cichlids, which is what I want, because I have other fish in my tank that I have to keep. Most of them are my brothers. I said we would put them back into his tank. He has 20 fish, and they said that that would over crowd his putting 3 corries, 3 danios, and 3 tetras. Not to mention his dwarf plecos. So that would make 31 small fish. That is so not overcrowding the tank!

3. I have to close my 29 gallon tank. I need to keep a tank up because my fry are getting big, and you cant keep 15 guppies, 1 plattie, 1 swordtail, and 1 panda cory in a 10 gallon tank forever! The 29 would be the perfect place for them to live! But no, id have to use the 20 gallon, and get rid of the 29, even though it is an established tank, and the 20 has not been used for a few months now!

I especially hate the fact that IF I do get it I have to do freakin community fish again! I hate them, they are so boring and i no longer want to keep them.

what does that have anything to do with what I said? I do respect by parents, but that does not mean that they are right in this matter.

They have no right to tell me that if I have to buy it I cant get what i want for it. That is wrong.

I'm lucky my brother hates fish so I don't have that problem. It's kind of werid that they will let you get a 75 gallon which is actually a pretty big tank but they won't let you get chiclids. Personally I would never get small fish again I find them boring. Oh well, good luck.

I totally agree. BORING! All of them. Though I still like corries.

agree parent are annoying.bought a second hand 45 gal with stand 3 weeks ago and they couldnt wait to get it set up. now we are moving house they said i need to sell it, so i was forced to sell it this saturday :(

thats teribble!

well, they decided to change their minf to a 55 gallon. Which i dont mind, that just means that i can eliminated the NW's that i liked, which is good.

Well, I am not sure now what to do. It would only cost me $59-69 because my aunt gave me $100 to get the tank for christmas. But i wanted to put that twards a car, or something important, plus I hate spending money. It makes me stressed out. I still would be able to do Peacocks, which I decided I want.

But I dont want to get rid of my 29 gallon. My mom got that for me for christmas, and I dont want to waste her money. It makes me feel bad that I would. I want to be able to keep that one up as well, and have it my planted tank for the guppies, plattie and sword fry.

You're paying for that 55g with your own money. Noone but you should be allowed to put any type of restrictions on it. Where is it going to be kept? Ask them why they won't let you get cichlids, then work around that. Cheers!

Do your parents know alot about fish? Id sneak cichlids in but thats just me. Sya their a kind of tetra or something. :D I know what you mean, I have to fight to get a second tank,

First off... I still live with my parents too.

I tell this to many people that have mentioned something similar. It is still your parents house. You are lucky that they let you have more than 1 tank. If you can't do what you want to do, then why not wait and try and talk them into something bigger later.

They obviously know a bit about fish if they are conserned about over crowding. Did you ask them the reason why you can't keep chichlids? Maybe they think they are harder to care for, or don't know much bout them and don't want you to get in over your head. Maybe it would be a good idea if you sat down with them and talked about it. I don't know how old you are, but if you talk to them as a responsable adult. No 'i wanna's' or 'my friends do'. If you find out the real reason why they don't want certain things, then you will be able to come up with a reasonable compromise.

I found this worked with my parents for some things.

I live in rez at university, that's the only reason why I'm allowed to have my tanks. It started with one betta, and has exploded from there into 7 bettas [2 currently in the spawn tank], my 10g spawn tank that will later become a community, and my 15g community.

They're going to make me tear down the 10g when I get home, but the rest I can keep. Though if I don't end up getting to change my major to Marine Biology and go to Nova Scotia, I'll be living with my grandparents here while going to uni. And since they sooo badly want me to live with them, I'm going to ask for a 55 gallon tank. :D

Now, for convincing your parents, point out that it's your money going into this tank. Offer the 29g to your brother, keep the 20 running for yourself. Orrrr the fish from your 10g can go into the 29g with his fish, depending on the filter you're using.

The only reasons I can see them being against cichlids are that they're relatively expensive [for me, anyway.. a yellow lab is $12] and they're aggressive. They're probably hoping to see a peaceful tank, not one where the fish try to beat the crap out of each other all the time.

LOL with my parents it not a case of 'no you can't', its a case of 'But why/why not?'.

I mean.... I've always liked fish. I've never had them before however. So when I hinted I'd like a fish, they told my uncle to get me a tank for Xmas. Well, knowing I'd be getting a tank, I came on here and looked up fish, finding out tank sizes etc. Then for Xmas, I got.... a 11 litre 'goldfish' tank. Not to sound ungrateful, because I'm not, but the £20 it cost probably could have got me a 10-12 gallon tank (2nd hand of course). Then came the explaining WHY I can't keep a goldfish in there. Then why I only wanted one betta (idiot..... my dad I mean) in the tank. Then why I needed to do water changes (dad again). Well, now I have my betta, and a 18 US gallon tank wating to be set up and cycled. No doubt the ext thing will be 'But WHY can't you put some of those silver sharks/oscars/ huge fish in your tank?'

Go get some ice, you obviously need to just cool down. Don't you dare take out your frustration on me. They are your parents and even if it doesn't seem fair to you, you just have to suck it up and deal with it. I didn't say I agree with your parents.
