I dont tell them anything, my brother does. THe catfish are, syndontis, I cant spell it, the e ones. I just usually copy and paste it. I feel so stupid :*) .

I already have some of those and dont like them. I was in the mood for some africans.

There is no doubtr in my mind my parenst will not buy me any of those fish. Though my dad on occasion has bought me some, teo corries and the syndontis, or however it is spelled.

But they wont let me get anymore fish. i think that a 55 gallobn would be a waste for just about 9 fish. I may add a corry from another tank though if I must stick with the community fish.

I only want like 12 fish anyways. And the cheaper africans, not the expensive ones.

And, they wont let me buy any new fish!! Im frecking almost 18, like a week and 1/2! I should be able to get fish if I want. It is not their money, nor them that are ressposnible for the tanks.
yes, but it is their house and their floorspace. i think what the other guys mean when they say "chill" is that it doesn't help to fume on the forum and it also doesn't help to fume at your parents. a great big knock-down, drag-out fight isn't the best plan to convince them. and brooding about it won't help you think of a good compromise.

probably the reason they want you to consolidate tanks is so that there's more room in the house. it sounds like you guys have several tanks as it is! i know a 75 is about 4ft long, a 55 is generally another 3~4ft, a 30 is 2.5ft and a 10 is a foot-and-a-half. that's a lot of space, especially since the 75 & 55 both need extra-strong flooring so are probably nearby. yes, you're going to buy the tank, fish, food, etc. but you can't buy more floorspace for the house, not easily anyways. :p maybe if you got rid of your bed... oo! oo! waterbed!

also, as you mentioned, you're almost 18. you're getting closer to moving out of the house and leading your own life. probably your parents don't want to inherit the responsiblities of caring for your cichlids. cichlids live for a good long while and as your parents seem pretty up on fishkeeping, i bet they know this. unless you've got plans to find a nice ground-floor apartment and move the tank out with you, i bet your parents view this tank as an investment for themselves as well. and they like community fish, even if you don't.

of course, the moving out has its own benefits -- namely the freedom to do what you want (within reason of course  ). i suggest that you just go with the flow and save that money you would have spent on a nice rift set-up. that way you have some seed-cash for when you get your own place.

one more thing... i noticed that you're complaining about your parents wanting to understock a couple of the older tanks. it is entirely possible that they want to buy some fish of their own! or maybe your dad is plotting to purchase you something special as a surprise.

i suggest that you trust your parents reasoning. its easier that way and in just a couple of years, it won't really matter one way or the other. besides, just because you can't have your way now doesn't mean you can't get it later... :sly:

lol. My mom like the fry, and that is it. My dad likes sharks and oscars. They dont like community fish at all. Though they are quite fond of my brothers goldfish.

The tank are in the basement, so there is plenty of room. I will be living at home though for a while, untill maybe 21, because the college I am going to is very close by.

well, my parents change their mind like the wind. I guess that is where I got it from.
1st I can get the 75 so that I can do the cichlids. They know that is why I want it.
2nd they say, nope just the 55. They still know I am going to get cichlids.
3rd they decide, nope you cant get cichlids or any new fish if you get the tank. I only have 9 fish! a 55 gallon for 9 tiny fish, though the catfish should get a bit bigger, is a waste of money.

how often do your parents go look at the fish?
If not often they probably won't notice if you add a couple more.

If they feed the fish for your brother or you, take over that responsability so they will look at the fish less.

Then when you finally decide to just do as your please (hell your nearly 18) and get cichlids say they were a gift from a friend - possibly girlfriend, my mum would do anything for my gf's when i was at home, or your mates fish just spawned and he has to get rid of some so you HELPED him out.

Or get some and when they do spawn show your parents how protective and caring they are and say it reminds you of them.

well, in my family, it doesnt matter if its your money of their money, its you wasting money on something that you dont need. well, this is only my family, cause we are kinda poor. remember this though, you cant always get what you want

At least you have somewhat of a larger tank. My parents won't let me get anything bigger than a 10 gal. tank, as long as I live in their house. Since we live in Southern California, they feel that anything bigger than a 10 gal. is a disaster waiting to happen if a large earthquake happens to hit us. Stinks, because someone was offering me a second hand 29 gal. with everything, stand and all, for $100. I was so ready, but my parents would not let me buy it.
Although I do agree with the others, it is their house, and I am happy they let me keep a 10 gal. at least. :D

Same here. I got offered an 80 gallon with stand, filter, hood, lights and everything (including fish, which are pirahnas) for $150  But I don't have the room for it and my parents won't allow me to have a tank that big

man, that must've killed to have to turn down... but "he who owns the roof, owns the floor"... suxor

well, no fiends have fish, they know that. I only talk to two people mostley because all my other friends and i dont have the same classes nor have time to talk.

They dont eed the fish, I do. And I do everything for every singel tank and betta. I probebly wont get the tank though, as it would be a waste.

good call... save your money and remember, you may change your mind about wanting to live at home once you hit the college campus. a couple hundred won't earn too much interest in 3 years, but every little bit counts.

its more fun having your tanks in your own apartment anyways. it gives you so much more freedom in your choices.

LOL, I've recently got a 18g for my room (its all that will fit) with filter and a couple of decorations for £25. But I looked in the freeads..... there was a 3ft tank on is own for £15...... :X
