So I used to own a 10 gallon tank with guppies and I just loved them. Since then I've upgraded to a 30 gallon tank which had gourami's and barbs and all sorts of other lovely things. That upgrade was around 2-3 years ago, and the sole survivors are my Pleco and a single rosy barb. Rather than sitting around waiting for him to throw in the belt, could I also put some guppies in there since I know they are what I want once he's gone, or is he going to kill them all? Thanks for reading!

Yeah that's pretty much a time bomb for the guppies if you decide to put some.

My Rosy Barbs are very peaceful fish and wont attack other fish, although I'm sure if you breed guppies they would be extremely efficient at clearing up guppy fry because they have incredible appetites.

I had originally planned to buy a smaller number of guppies than I wanted and to save a few from each spawn and have them grow up in my now empty 10 gallon. But from my googling i've found some pretty solid mixed reactions of both it working fine and it not working at all, guess it depends on the personality of the fish.

I have had a change of heart since posting this and so searched for this post to come back and update. This only happened in the last week. The Rosy Barbs reached a certain size and started doing things they have never done as small fish, like nipping the dorsal fins of the Corys and no sooner had they started doing this, they obviously realised how tasty other fish are and did it more and more looking like bullies. So, it's with sad regret that my time with Rosy and Barb is over and they went back to the shop today.

Thank goodness rosy barbs were one my 'first' fishes and they taught me that they are one of the best barbers of the freshwater kingdom. I literally watched them do an army cut to the fins of my goldfish before lol

Hello

As I know this thread is older but I found it now in 2024. I bought guppies and the rosy red barbs at same time from a store. The guy working there told me they would be fine in same tank. 2 dead guppies later and one missing a tail. I will tell you DO NOT DO THIS. Especially when the Barbs are in heat. They will chase and eat the tails of the guppies until they die. Yes die. Don’t do this.

Once I knew what was happening I immediately removed the barbs from the tank. There is a noticeable change in the guppies happiness and also the African dwarf frogs I have in the tank are having more fun and swimming around more also. As of now the community tank consists of guppies, African dwarf frogs, and Cory catfish. All peacefully living together.

Rule #1. Unless you know their level of aquatic knowledge, never take the advice of a Pet store employee.

Yes definitely agree with this. Sadly it was a store that all they sale are fish and reptiles. Not a big name brand but a local shop. I feel like they made the sale just for the money and not for good faith
