Hey Peeps :)

As some of you will know I'm going to re-do my nano to get more 'hills' into the scape. Having looked at various scapes that use rocks as focal points, it seems that the rocks themselves don't really need to be all that 'impressive', i.e. they don't have to be fancy shapes and sizes. I had thought about dragon rock because of the cool shapes it has but am thinking now that less 'complex' rocks would work better? Just wondering what peoples thoughts are?

Thanks

Sam

PS - This is an idea of 'simple' rocks, but that still look fantastic in a scape.

Keep It Simple Stupid!!!!!

(not actually calling you stupid) :hey:

I'm all for the use of so-called "simple" rocks. Just look at that picture in the link -- there's nothing simple about that 'scape or those rocks.

Check out Suiseki (google it) -- it's the ancient art/practice of "viewing stones".

-as an aside, I'm an avid Bonsai collector/sculptor; Suiseki is part of that hobby.

"Viewing stones" are usually simple river stones, as a matter of fact, that's where most suiseki are found - in a river, yet they take on an extremely beautiful form when stared at, inspected, and reflected upon. The basic idea of suiseki is to see every stone as an enormous mountain range.

A simple stone will take on a more complex meaning when you plant around it. Good Luck!!

Okay, long-winded support of your idea over.

Go simple!!!!

Anyone else got any thoughts? I've had an offer of a visit to see Jimboo in the next week or so as he says there are a few decent rock shops near him, so will need to make my mind up by then!

I guess if you are going for a hill look some rock that looks like weathered rocky outcrops would work best, the dragon rock on aquaessentials is ‘complex’ I don’t think it would look natural with hills, something more rounded less craggy would be better, though I make no claims to be an ‘aquascaper’
