well i went to look at some rock for my upcoming tank at a local landscaping company.
found a few types of rock i like.

feather stone -greyish in color and can be drilled to make multiple caves/tunnels. .76/pound
tufa rock - white/tan color looks like marine coral also can be drilled .63/pound
slates -anywhere from white to deep brown/black .33/pound - 1.50/pound
river rock - white/tan/reddish/brown .22/pound

for volume of rock tufa rock would be the cheapest as it is fairly light for size you get.
tufa rock also raises ph i understand so that also might help.

any suggestions on rock choice?
im in no rush as still cleaning tank/sump and still gotta cycle it

Tufa is pretty much the wrong rock for Mbuna. Feather stone the same. Slate, river rock, lime stone, granite are your best bets. Stay with something that is smooth surfaced because.....1- it's more natural to their habitat, 2- it's safer because they live in and around the rock so less chance of them getting nicked by sharp/rough edges, 3- if you want buffering, lime stone will do the job.

Anything that buffers the water and increases pH would be your bet.
