Ro Water Or Tap Water

I don't understand why people feel the need to comment on how much I paid. Of course people are entitled to an opinion but to make the seller out to be a rip-off merchant was uncalled for.
As for finding them cheaper, we have been looking for a long time and had no joy. Therefore, when we did have the opportunity to buy some, we snapped them up.

People will comment if you state the price, its human nature and with zebras for some its an emotive subject.

As you have stated its your money and im 'made up' for you that you found the fish you had been looking for for so long. A lot of the perceived 'nastiness' or whatever is probably directed more at the seller than you the buyer, imho they were overpriced, but i didnt buy them, you did so its not a problem.

One thing that confuses me, if you were looking for such a long time why did you only join zebrapleco.com after you bought them? You only have to visit the home page to see how many registered breeders there are, these are people who in all likelyhood would rather see the fish go to a good home for a reasonable price, especially if you have breeding intentions (under £100 a fish, this is a fact) rather than try and get the maximum they could on ebay like the guy/girl you bought them from.

I have been looking on the private sales at Zebrapleco.com but there still didn't seem many about. There are a couple of people who have posted "wanted" ads and had no response.
To be honest, I never thought to post an ad stating that I wanted them for breeding. In hindsight, it is a good idea but I can't turn back the clock.

Lol..you just put exactly what I've spent the last 5 minutes writing, only nicer lol...

if you really want something and have been looking for it for sometime, then your going to pay what ever it costs for it, you could be waiting years for one to come cheaper, if you want it then you want it.
after looking at my fishes needs and what they like best i have decided to go for... doing one water change treated tap water and then the next one RO and so on
i live in a hard water area and my tap water is testing quite high so by using RO every other water change it will bring the hardness down if needed
so i have just gone and bought some tap safe and have just done a 15 % water change using tap water, i am going to change the water gradually as i figure that after being in such stripped water, it could be a big shock to be put in tap water,
i checked my water stats before and after and theres no real change,
hope that makes sence
if i have done anything wrong or you would of done it different then please let me no

I say spend whatever you want on whatever you want as long as your happy doing it then who cares

My friends think i'm mad cos I spent £150 on a 23 year old electronic saxophone that was broken - I fixed it with about 30 quids worth of stuff and i'm well happy. They also think i'm mad cos i have 3 saxophones - "how can you play all 3 at the same time - surely you only need one"

It makes me happy though

yup any major changes should be made gradually, i should have said that before tbh, sorry!

only thing that worries me is that your water quality is now going to fluctuate, one week when you add RO it'll go down, next week when you add tap water it'll go back up. stability is important, as you've said yourself major changes to the water should be done gradually, having it change evry weeks a bad idea

if you want to go for part ro and part tap water i'd advise you to mix up 50/50 for each water change to keep it stable.

good on you for doing your own research and working it out :good:

Amen spud amen, let alone the £££'s or $$$'s we go through eh?? im sat here looking at a few hundred quids worth of plecs myself lol

I'd guess most of the sales there are done privately through pm's but for anyone wondering about doing the same thing. The members (breeders) there like to see people take part in the forums to prove they are committed before anyone will consider selling to them...no-one gets sold zebs by just putting up an advert asking for them with their first and only post.

That could explain why some of the ads have gone unanswered then. It is a good idea though.

Yeah it's a great idea and sometimes the buy/sell forum is used as it is intended. But with so many people looking for zebs for one reason or another you can't blame breeders for assuming the worst when a new member with no posts comes and asks for them and hasn't taken part in any of the discussions regarding their care etc...There are plenty of people who do take part though and obviously breeders/members are going to give them priority over someone they have no idea of.
Still, regardless of opinion and price, I hope you enjoy you new zebs.

Thanks. :)
It makes perfect sense for people to become members first, I'd never really thought about it before.
I suppose with them being quite rare, sellers want to get more of an idea about who will be buying them.
I must confess, I have no experience with Zebras, only other assorted Plecos but we have done plenty of research and didn't go into it lightly. I appreciate that's it a big step to go from owning to breeding but we will continue to do our research and make sure we give them the care they need.
