Anyone here connect an RO unit to their sink (kitchen/bathroom) tap only when they need to run off RO water? Obviously, it has to be flushed before collecting the RO water, but anyone do this? I don't really have the room under the sink in the kitchen for the unit to be fitted in permanently. If you can do this, what type of connector do you use to connect it to your taps? I have a mixer type tax so I'm not sure what kind of pressure-ready connector to get or where to buy it. Any hints?

In theory I cant see any issue with it. However you would need to get a connector that fits on your tap and stays there when it it running at full blast under high pressure. This might be difficult to do and as far as I know there is no off the shelf connector to do this.

What you could do is still plumb it in directly onto the water pipes and use two shut off valves on each line and push connectors on all the tubes. When you have finished with it close of both shut of valves and then just disconnect all the tubes.

All you will be left with is the tubing attached to your water pipes/drain with shut off valves on the end. You can then store the RO unit somewhere else until you need to use it.

What an ace idea!! :)

So the tubing is the general type of tubing that comes supplied with the RO units anyway? To get more, what material/diametre are we talking?

And the shut-off valves? Can you find them on the B&Q site or any other UK site so that I know exactly what to get?

thanks :)

Well, if you still want to connect it to the faucet, there has to be some UK version of this: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/group/680/product.web

I have one of those, and it works quite well.

Cool. I looked around for one of these for ages and couldn't find one. If one place is selling them though then somewhere else has to be :)

With regards to the tubing and valves. Yes it is the standard tubing you get with your RO unit. You cant get this from B&Q or any plumbing outlets (at least not the ones I tried) but will be able to get them from the same place you get your RO unit from. I got all my RO stuff from www.ro-man.co.uk

Hi, been reading as much as I can about RO units as I'm thinking of getting one.

I have a similar problem to JasonA as I don't necessarily want it connected permanently, not for space reasons but because I don't need that much (about 10 gallons a week).

Question:
Could I run the RO unit for a few hours once a week and store it in between, or would this damage it somehow?

I know I could get it from lfs, but it's expensive so an RO unit would pay for itself within 4 months.

Any answers much appreciated.

You can also pick up all types of pipe an connectors inc valves from e.bay and just have one postage. there are a few shops under the Fish section that stock everything you need for an RO unit. They also do mini ball valves to stop the water running into your tub so you dont flood the place :) I know I bought my stuff there after I flooded my utility room for the 5 time..lol
