RO is your cheapest route long term. The initial cost is more but you don't have to replace filters nearly as often.

Also, yes you can store RO water. There are two ways people do it: pressurized systems and unpressurized systems. A pressurized system uses a sealed water tank that has a rubber bladder inside. As water is pushed in the rubber bladder expands until the input pressure and internal pressure are the same. Then when a valve is opened the pressure in the tank pushes the water out. This system is the same used on houses with well water. I run this system and it works rather well. It keeps the water in a sealed system so it can't be contaminated and I have the water source tied into my drinking system on my house so I can also use the water for drinking purposes. The unpressurized system basically is just a storage tank that is filled with RO water that can be used at a later time. It is cheaper to setup this type of system, but the water can be contaminated before it is used. I know a few people who do this but usually because they need to keep 100+ gallons in store for an emergency and a sealed tank that size is quite expensive.

how many times do I have to replace the filter on a tapwater purification unit?

Hi...no to your first choice. Read the line on your product:

Produces an average of 50-150 gallons of perfect aquarium water depending on the mineral content of your tap water

IMO, RO is the only way to go (well, distilled is OK). PURE WATER or natural SW.

RO water can be stored is a cool dark place. SH

Typically any filter only setup needs to be replaced at least once a month. On an RO setup the sediment filters need to be replaced every six months and the RO membrane is typically good for 18 months. These are average times though and can differ depending on what your particular water chemistry is.
