thanks aaron the hole ferts things seems a lot clearer now, and lighting.

ive been looking at presurized CO2 and its pretty expensive, im willing to put in the extra work with the DIY CO2 till i can afford the presurized CO2.

ive been looking around at CO2 and ive found these 2

do you have any experience with these units? and are there any cheaper ones around?, i dont want to be faffing with fire extinguishers etc, so a kit would be useful.

and i figured if i change the bottles alternatly one every 2 days, (so each bottle gets 6 days) it should provide pretty constant CO2 till i can afford the kit. but im no expert so i will see what you think.

thanks alot truck :good:

the first kit comes with a 74g bottle which will last you a day...

second is better as it has a 600g bottle, but again this will not last you very long so it can be costly. The other option is to buy the D&D kit, use the bottle on it but when it has gone, buy a D&D convertor which allows you to use refillable bottle like fire extinghuishers so you can fit a 2kg on. This way it will be only like changing the bottle and you wont have to be buying all the different parts?

A lot less faffing that way.

a 2kg costs around £25, and will last you (estimating) 4 months.

The point at which they become dangerous is if you remove the saftey pin, and press the handle. But when attaching the reg, just tighten it on with a spanner, then remove the saftey pin and then get some cable ties or something similar that will keep the handle closed down in position. Read through the guide in my sig for further advice.

no thats an exageration, but my last 1 kg co2 bottle lasted me 4 months so my 2kg should last longer, but i have upped my co2 now so proably 6 months tops. go down the FE route mate, it is soo easy. and yes, my planted tank has cost about £365 so far and im no where near done.

im going presurized kit, i cant go with the FE because of safety etc. (dad thinks its dangerous) so ive got to go presurized CO2.

how long should 500 grams last? a month?

start off with 2BPS, adjust slowly because it takes about 2hrs for the drop checker to change colour, some people get impatient and bang it right up and end up gassing all their fish!

500g would be about a month.

Don't see how FE is more dangerous than pressurized CO2. The FE has pressurized CO2 inside it and consists of regulator etc!

As for bubbles, you've got to experiment for the first few days. Tweaking it up or down until you get a green drop checker (used with the 4dkh solution and bromo blue reagent). I have a Rio125 aswell and I have no idea how many bubbles a second it has because they're going to damn fast :D Start with 2 per second and work from there.

500g should last maybe a bit more than a month, not too sure as I've always worked with 2kg.

ok thanks.

what do i put in the drop checker? is it universal indicator or dkh4 solution?

and does the liwuid need to be taken out after them 2 hours? or do i just leave it in there?

add 3 drops of bromo blue (low rage ph test), then get a pippette and add some 4dkh solution, fill the ball half full. Leave the solution in for a constant CO2 measurement and change it every 1-2weeks.
