Now - Fish really did not want to cooperate when it came to having their pics taken, still adjusting perhaps. The new driftwood is leaching tannins into the water, pretty yellow right now but doesn't really matter to me.

Driftwood looks very nice, it would look even better once everything settles. How are the Discus doing?

Well, they are still alive. I guess thats about as good as it gets when your a fish living in a bowl. They seem to be enjoying the new digs, the Rams especially. I looked around for driftwood forever, and never found anything that I liked or could justify spending the outragous dollars on that they ask for at the fish shops. I went to the foster and smith site to buy a new heater and they had really low prices on "large piece driftwood" so I figured why not take a shot and see what I get. It was only $15 a piece, so I bought two thinking I might get one good one, still only spending $30 which is less than 1 rubbish piece from my LFS. I ended up likeing and using both. They compliment eachother well.

Sean, I put your two cents in my pocket. I thought it looked a little too artificial before for my tastes. In fact, it always made me think So. Cal so its kind of funny to read your location.

I need to replace the sand in my tank. I had a really bad algea bloom a few weeks ago and it covered the entire bed of sand. I tried to sift it out with a net but its still a total mess. Debating if I want to go with sand again or not after that. I know the rams wouldnt really appreciate gravel.

i think i like the before only cause the water is crystal clear... i cant stand cloudy/merky water in a fish tank, drives me crazy, i think once everything settles it wll look a lot better..

did you boil the wood before you put it in?

There was no way I would have been able to. The pieces are too big. I just rinsed it off as best as I could.

you dont have to boil bog wood, just soak it and keep changing the water until it stays clear i have a big piece in my tank about 2.5 foot by 1.5 and i managed to soak that for about a week and a half in a plastic storage box thing and has never made the slightest of difference to my water!
tank looks good and your fish look very healthy, it just looks a little bare, i thought discus liked plants?
very nice fish all the same!

Even if discus like a planted tank (which I don't think they have a preference), I don't. I wanted it to be easy to clean. And like I said, I figured it would turn the water yellow and I didn't care. I do enough water changes that it will probably be clear again in a few days. This is how is always envisioned my tank looking. Guess I have unique tastes when it comes to aquascaping.

dont worry about the tannins the discus LOVE the tannin coloures water discus keepers like me who really want their discus to be more comfy (which is very important) actually put bags of peat in the tank to colour the water and lower ph.
