Hi all,
Just wanted to say hello and thank you for such a valuable resource.
I'm based in NE Scotland, living with my husband, son and 2 dogs, and working as a secondary school teacher.
I'm planning a return to the hobby, but since I've been away from it properly for 16 years, there's been massive changes...online forums? fishless cycling? Didn't have any of this back in the day! What happened to run it for a week and just add fish!? I'm so glad I've found this resource!
Fishkeeping was a serious hobby for me through high school - at my 'peak', I was running 10 tanks of various sizes and types, a regular on the FSAS circuit showing a range of species but mostly livebearers, and even had the honour of being their first Junior Aquarist of the Year. But exams and moving away to uni meant I had to run the tanks right down, taking only a 120L with me, and not being a driver put paid to the show circuit. The last tank went in 1999.
I've always missed it but life gets in the way and it's only now that I'm in a position to seriously consider getting back into it. I'm looking to start with something 120-180L size, planted community. Just for enjoyment at the moment, and to introduce my son to the hobby - he's very interested in the whole thing, and has talked me into taking him to the next show as well, just for a look. We're likely to be moving house in the next couple of years, after which I would hope to expand my collection a little further.
At the moment, I'm researching my options - I was looking at going for a starter kit but having read through some threads, I think I'm going to get better value for money by buying components individually, both in terms of cost and suitability.
Looking forward to the day I can start getting things up and running, but will keep myself going in here in the meantime.
