Restocking 55 Gallon

I have decided that I am not home enough to run my tanks and care for my discus after I lost one, so I have consolidated to one 55 gallon planted tank.

Currently,
5 Glowlight tetra's
5 Tiger Barbs
3 Cories
1 Syno
3 Bala's

I want to add some smaller schoaling brightly colored fish. Basically, I want to keep the tank going with minimal cost - any thoughts other than neons/cardinals?

I think the balas will get a big big for a 55 unless its a really long tank, they need the swimming space really. What type of syno is it? No probs with most of them I just really like them

I think if it was me I would get rid of the balas and then boost all your schools up to about 10 each maybe even 15 for the glowlights. Then maybe an additional school of 15 of an other fish. I think maybe for me it would be lemmon tetras or green neons. Or you could get a school of 10 disk type tetras like bleeding hearts or serpae personally in these type of fish i like the flame or von rio tetras. I think big schools always look more natural and in most cases create very natural behavior but I can understand people wanting lots of schools of 5 or 6

The balas get way to big for a 55 gallon tank, and they need to be kept in schools of 3 or more. I would up the shoals liek suggested.
