He is such a lovely fish, he looks rather fat though, more on 1 side than the other :/ swimbladder issue maybe?

i was going to comment oh his appearance but didnt want you to feel badly as youve only just gotten him (hes handsome btw).
he does appear rather fat, especially considering his body condition which seems a bit on the thin side. Id not feed him for a day or two and perhaps give a pea in the mean time. see if that sorts his balance (you can tell hes having trouble just from the photos).
hopefully in a nice environment now, after you get his bloat/balance under control, he will put on a little body mass.
Youre a good keeper so i know hes in good hands. Just some things i noticed about him. Im sure he will be fine but just keep an eye out for the sb getting worse, him not pooing, or any spitting out food or losing more weight (internal parasites).
best of luck and thanks for sharing
cheers

Was actually waiting for your reply Loraxchick, i am planning on just feeding him peas for the rest of the week, checking for him going toilet etc, hoping that brings his fatness down. i currently have him in a small shallow container so he can get up for air, he is more active tonight, swimming about more, he will be kept in here until he can swim better (if he gets there, Hopeso!) then will be living in a 3 gal so again not too deep if the problem doesn't completely go, i will be keeping a very close eye on him :good:

I have a draw full of meds so should be able to deal with just about anything this lil guy can throw at me

so long as he can eat and the swelling/bloat in his tum goes down can take some time for the sb to stabilize. also some fish never seem to get "over" their sb issues and always are "tippy". But again, as long as he can scuttle around and eat ok and get air he should be fine. Lets hope its just being a bit bloated.

and ps..im on the lookout for a new guy myself. recently had an old man pass die and have a free tank.feeling like i need to jump on this betta rescue wagon. all my boys have been rescues but havent had room in quite some time

keep us update with his progress. VTs are my loves
cheers

Tippy i can deal with will just give him plenty of high places to rest in the tank :) hoping so much that it is just bloating, he's a lovely lil guy and always comes to say hello when someone walks in the room, he loves the attention already

I tend to 'rescue' a few whether it be like this guy from my LFS or 'imperfects' from breeders, there all perfect in my eyes :D

i thinki will always have a soft spot for VTs especially reds

reds are my FAVORITE! :hyper: but dont think ill ever get another red vt. my last red was over 3 years in my care after rescue from a centerpiece from a wedding  best betta i ever owned. he was my happy chappy and a special guy. so ive retired the reds for me. i love to see other's reds tho.

enough rambling and hijacking your thread.

time for some waterchanges
cheers

No worries about hijacking! not that you were at all :D

my last red was a rescue too, Raja, lost him recently to some mystery illness that wiped out 3 out of 4 males in my divided tank :/

i had a similar experience with divided tanks. ive stopped using them and seriously downgraded my stock over time due to space issues. was very frustrating when the outbreak occured and despite my best efforts a few didnt make it. Cant put myself thru that again. Even though i dont name my fish, the bettas in particular are really special fishies and it was difficult to deal with.

It did put me off a little but now i just do extra water changes and keep a very very close eye on everyone and make sure each new addition to it is QT
