i just got a rena xp1 filter. it didnt come with media, it says it does but it didnt. and i dont see a spot for media just a couple slots were the are sponges. does this filter need media, and if so were does it go

If you bought it new, media ahould be supplied. If this is the case, take it back to the place of purchase to get the media from them.

If this is a second hand filter, you will likely need to add your own. With the XP1, I'd have smooth ceramic in the bottom half of the internal basket and fine foam in the top half :good: This will polish the water reasonably well and offer plenty of biological filtration :good:

All the best

The sponges that it came with are the main media. There is a coarse one that goes on the bottom and a finer one that goes on top of that. There should also be a bag of charcoal looking stuff that they call biochemsorb. A Rena typically also comes with a white filter pad that goes right in front of the impeller. If you don't need the carbon right now, get a bag of ceramic noodles to put into the filter basket where the biochemsorb media would go and you will be set.
