hi everyone,

just a quick question. is an air pump necessary. i decided to remove it as it was annoying me. the u2 filter does have a little nozzel ontop of it to allow water surface disruption. plus then the flow is on the top as before i had it in the middle of the tank.

Hello mate,

An Air-Pump isn't necessary it doesn't do much apart from create surface movement and look pretty. The filter is the the thing that you need. As-long as the water is agitated on the surface oxygen will get into the water :) just pull the filter outlet a little closer too the surface. or put the diffuser on like you said you had :)

So if you want to take it out thats fine. I dont have them in any of my tanks anymore, Although i did have one in my bigger tank for a while. its now gone because of the terrible noise haha

Hope this helps :good:

yeah thats exactly what i wanted to hear. was my reason for removing it too.
thanks much.

You can get pretty silent air pumps and there are ways to make them quieter but all in all sometimes there just too loud for say bedroom tanks :)

They can look awesome though, so if its what you want then lol you have to deal with it :)

This tank is in the front room and apart from the pump makin a bit of noise, the cats love chewing on the air hose which drives me insane so if i remove it they cant chew on it.

Pull out their teeth.

Harsh! :hyper:

What sort of pumps are best to get for silence?

I do like my air pump effect, and the misses will never let me take it out, but i do get annoyed with the noise!

Any suggestions?

We have a Tetratec APS300 and it is very quite indeed. In fact my Fluval 405 is louder!

Tetratec are very quiet as fishprotector has pointed out. Unless you realy want the bubbles in your tank then an air pump is completely unnecessary.
