Reject Betta On Ebay I Want..

Ah - you found Jodi-Lea Matheson. She's a regular on most of the Australian fish forums.

If you import bettas from Asia off aquabid here's a breakdown of the fees in $AU:
$30 or so - approximate price of the fish, this varies of course.
$5-10 - transhipper fees within Asia (getting the fish to port)
$25 - transport into Australia, health certification, quarantine
Then up to $60 or so - local shipping from Brisbane to you.

This is PER FISH and it does not reduce much if you buy a lot of them, so you're actually better off buying a few fish unless you are talking wholesale quantities. Jodi-Lea will receive fish from basically wherever you care to have them imported from, and for $25 a fish will handle the transport of the fish into australia, the documentation, licensing, health certification and the quarantine. This includes her transhipper fee. I believe it is slightly less - about $20 - for females and plakats. Then she sends the fish to you by courier and you pay for that.

So if you're willing to fork out that much money, it's not actually that difficult to bring them in. It's just that it costs more than the fish are worth to most people. It increases the price of a nice pair from $40 to near $230.

Jodi-Lea breeds, she's got fish available sometimes. There is a breeder near Cairns who's just moved house as far as I know and does not have fish available at present - I'm hoping to get some off them when they start again because I'm only an hour from Cairns. There's a breeder in Mill Park, Melbourne, concentrating on symmetrical plakats but usually has some other fish available, currently nothing though. Livefish.com.au sells but you cannot see the exact fish you're buying and you can indicate colour preference but that's no guarantee you get it. Also I don't know if I'd trust their ID of a hm or a delta... I mean, there's a lot of difference between a symmetrical gorgeous HM and a rough and ready one with uneven rays.

^^
Thanks for breaking the shipping down! Do you know of any online places i could look for bettas that are Aus based??

So today i decided to clean out all the odd bits and peices i have got stashed under my big tanks. Like old filter parts etc. Low and behold i found my spare spray bar and another divider :D :ninja:

So tomorrow im putting my spray bar back in and redividing both tanks :D Which gives me adequate room for two more fishies!!!! Sneaky....my fiancee' will kill me but its not like im buying more tanks....is it??

Netty: any suggestions on how to cut a small hole to fit my spray bar through the divider and not big enough so they can squeeze through? LOL!

What's the divider made of?

I was actually looking that up this morning, because I'm frustrated by the lack of decent bettas too... there don't seem to be very many intermediate options for people who don't want to pay top dollar for show quality imports, but who don't want to breed yet more pet store veiltails either. I can usually get nice CT males through the lfs but the only females they are able to get are wild coloured plakat females... if you breed them to a VT, you get veiltails. You breed them to a CT, you get CTs with short fins. But they virtually all return to the red and blue wild colouration, which is extremely dominant.

So far I have not managed to find a single decent Australian fish auction site... the ones that are online are all classifieds (which are dodgy) or offer cheap bettas but you can't see the exact fish you're bidding on, or only sell supplies not live fish... your best bet is to lurk the breeders' websites until you spot something you want on a stock page. I was on this morning like I said and they all seem to be out of stock at the moment. I'll go and see if I can get some links.

Cut the hole just smaller then the diameter of the spray bar using a large drill bit, small holesaw or rotary tool such as a dremel. Then sand and polish the hole and check the spray bar fits if its tight and can support itself when tipped horizontally then your set, if however the hole is a couple of mm out line the hole with some silicone sealant and leave to set then test again, repeat until you have the spraybar tight.

Hi
When you cut out for the bar to go through the divider, if accidently you cut too big use some cut up bits of filter sponge to fill the gap :good:

Cant believe that in Australia they charge you that for EACH fish......rip off! The only time we bought from aquabid, the sibling female didn't add anything to shipping fees, just the £5 for the fish. How does that transhipper justify those cost?

The problem in the UK is that we dont have a transhipper listed on aquabid anymore. The closest one i can find is Germany, so that would bump the price up.
