I emailed S E Johnson asking them to clarify about their Glade products as on some it warns to to put in a room with fish or birds. I hope this may be of help. Below is their answer to me

*********************************************************

Thank you for your recent email concerning the Glade fragranced products.

I do apologise for any doubts raised with regards to health and safety issues for pets. I should mention that, while there is a warning on the products that the contents can be harmful to aquatic organisms and may cause long-term adverse effects in the aquatic environment, this actually applies to the unlikely possibility that the full contents of a product should be immersed into the water in the fish tank. However, since the possibility does exist, we are required to include the caution on the label.

From the viewpoint of usage, I would suggest not placing any dispensing unit (plug-in or batter unit) right beside a fish tank nor in close proximity to a birdcage, as constant direct and prolonged exposure to the fragrance may result in an adverse reaction. A difference of 4 feet should be sufficient. Nonetheless, the Glade units can certainly be placed in a room containing birds or fish without ill effect to either, provided the fragrance has the means to disperse through the room without being confined to their immediate vicinity for prolonged periods.

May I suggest that the same usage be observed with regard to the Oust portable fan or indeed any plug in unit with a liquid fragrance bottle.

With regards to the aerosols, as long as the are sprayed well away from the fish tank, there will be no problem for the fish.

I do hope that this has helped to address your concerns and reassure you regarding the Glade Wisp. Please be assured that I will pass your comments and concerns to our Glade brand manager for interest and I am certain that your comments will be given due consideration with regard to future labelling.

Thank you for contacting SC Johnson and if you should have any further concerns, please feel free to contact me on 0800 353 353.

Yours sincerely

Hmm, not sure I'd take the chance. Anything that's sprayed in a room will find it's way into the tank (maybe not a great deal), but I really don't think it's worth the risk. With my fish, I always work on the principle ''if in doubt, don't''.

I have plug in air freshners but I don't use them where my tank is.

I wouldn't even want one in a room I was in let alone my fish! In modern doubled glazed houses the levels of organic pollutants in the air can get quite high as the air changes are restricted and you then breath it in yourself. I work on the premise that if it's likely to need handling in a fume cupboard at work then I like to avoid it full stop.

Interesting response though.

I've never had to use any air fresheners since I always smell sweet as a rose.

It's nice that they gave you such a detailed response . Not all companies do that (even if it is boilerplate).

I agree that it was nice to receive a response from the company.

I still wouldn't use any plug in or spray air fresheners in a room with fish. Once it's in the air, a certain amount will settle into the tank and be absorbed by the water. In most cases, simply opening a window will freshen the air and will also help remove any excess humidity caused by water evaporation from the tank.

Yes i thought it was very good of them to give a detailed reply and they also responed within 24 hours. makes a pleasent change to get a good service.
