Red Wag Platy

you don't NEED one if you have lots of plants and hding spots. If you do get one though, put the female in when she's really close to delivering so she won't get too stressed. Or let her give birth and catch the fry and put them in the fry tank. If you put her in too soon she might get stressed and abort. Also, most fo the fish (except the corys) will want to gobble them up

so i think i am going to get a fry tank but what does fry tank mean what does it have in it or is it just a tank that you put the female in to give birth

your platy might be pregnant but you cant tell by that picture
this is what mine looked like for 2 weeks before she gave birth

you will notice a massive change in her size by the 2nd week of pregnancy, mine was pregnant for 5 weeks but they can take up to 6 weeks to drop their fry

they are sort of a miniature tanks. You can buy them at your lfs. There is a bigger one called a breeder net and a smaller one called a breeding something (I forgot right now  ). the one I have has a V shaped thing in it that you put in the middle so that when the female gives birth the fry slip through so that the mom won't eat them while she's giving birth. Then when she is done you take her out and you take the V thing out and the fry can stay there for a couple of days. Then you will have to move them somewhere else so they can grow.

fry tank is a tank that you basically put your fry into, it must have lots of hiding places and plants, ideal with no substrate but if you do use substrate then make sure it is fine gravel, make sure you have a weakish sponge filter, you can have lights but its up to you they can do without lights, you keep them here until they are big enough to put into a main tank, regular water changes needed.

ok so i should just get a fry tank instead of the 2.5 gallon tank sould i let the female have birth in the tank and then put the fry in the fry tank or should i put the female in the fry tank and then have the fry?

will it be ok to put the fry in the fry tank after birth in the tank or put the female in the fry tank right before birth?

An ideal fry tank is about 10 gallons, you put the female there so that when she has birth you can take her out and the fry grow there. It should have plants and caves and stuff like that.

would like a 2.5 gallon tank be ok for just like a week because i am giving the fry to my LFS because i can't hold all them in my tank it is two small

I'd check with the shop; most won't take fry until they're a sellable size.
