Hello to all I am still relatively new to the fish tank world. I struggled for a little bit trying to get all the levels right in my tank and now they are at desirable levels. The PH is 7.0, the Ammonia is 0 - .25 ppm, the Nitrite is 0 - .25ppm , and Nitrate is 5.0 ppm. The reason that I am mentioning the different levels is because I just tested yesterday and noticed this morning that there is a red algae or something growing on my filtration system (specifically on the little arm that extends down into the tank. Any ideas on what this could be and what I should do about it.

I might be wrong but I think it is Brown Hair Algae. I have a small patch in my tank too.

Agree, sounds like brown algae, diatoms. Fairly harmless (just can look bad if you get more) and wipes away pretty easily from surfaces.

How's the fish-in cycling going?

It is going pretty good I have 4 tiger barbs (had to take one back it looked sick)and 3 Zebra danios, 1 chinese algae eater (I had one die on me), and a black banded leprodontius. I rehomed my silver dollars. I don't really know what else to get so I am just taking my time. What is your opinion on Dragon Fish. My husband saw one and liked them. I don't know if it would do well in my tank.

If they are they type I am thinking about (usually from petsmart) they are brackish water fish and are specialist feeders. I would steer clear of them unless you have the means to keep them up. Here's a link.

Thankfully we have Robby  ..I've never even heard of a dragon fish.. but then again, in my "re-beginner" mode I've figured out that if you stand in front of a Petsmart tank wall with the attendant desk in the middle, the entire right half of tanks consists of fish that are inappropriate for beginners, while the entire left half of tanks contain possibilities.. 'course I've only ever looked at 2 or 3 petsmarts, lol.

I have another question my black banded leporinius is about 4 inches about how old do you think he is.

I'd say he/she is less than a year old. They can get big...12 inches big and need to be in a 55 gallon tank or larger. I've also read a few things about them being really aggressive towards their tank mates. Black banded leporinus
ok I new he had a ways to go I have a 55gallon but not very many fish the leporinus is kind of the center piece
