My male ADF was going for a float yesterday and I noticed that he had a red spot on his tail. I had put in a tiger barb (big mistake!) a few days ago, (he has since been removed for harassing even my big tough male betta. Gotta love pet store staff that tell you they'll leave them alone...) and I think the barb had been snacking on him. I got a picture, but it's with a camera phone, and it's not very good quality.

I have a small tank that I have one fish in at the moment who is being treated with Melafix for torn fins, and I was wondering if Melafix might help his little heiny. Here's the picture:

Please let me know. I've read that Melafix is bad for ADFs, but then I've read that it's okay. Any help would be appreciated. I have him in a tank with another ADF, a betta, and a non-aggressive fish whose species I don't recall. There are plants to hide in and a teracotta pot to rest in away from the slight current from the filter and biowheel.

EDIT:

The frog died. I checked on him a few hours ago and he was swimming around just fine, red spot and all, and then just now I found him upside down on the bottom of the tank, stiff and with a green splotch on his underbelly. The red spot was gone. I got him out right away, and I'm trying to decide if I should add some Melafix to make sure my fish don't get sick in case it's a fungus. Here's a picture:

Any ideas? Please tell me. I want to make sure my other ADF and my fish stay healthy.

Thanks for the replies. boboboy, unfortunately, that's what it sounds like it is. I had read about redleg before, but it didn't seem to be what my little Mr. Tall had. I will keep an eye on Mr. Short to be sure she doesn't end up with the same thing.

Thanks so much for the information.

Sometimes I just add some Aquarium salt into my tank. I have an ADF too. You can buy the salt at almost any pet store and just sprinkle a little in there.

Will the aquarium salt harm my betta? I'm going back to the LFS later to check on what species my other fish are, so maybe I'll pick up a small package of aquarium salt while I'm there, too.

THe salt is used to promote disease protection and gill health. The box says you use the salt with freshwater fish so I bet you would be fine just sprinkling a little in the tank. Make sure you read the directions for the salt you buy though because it could be different directions and results.

Okay, so I went to the LFS and happened to find an associate who owns ADFs a many other fish. He said it doesn't sound much like redleg, but more like the tiger barb temporarily housed with my betta and two ADFs just nipped him and it got some sort of infection. He said that since my other ADF isn't showing any signs at all of illness, just to do a water change and turn the temp up in my tank a degree or two. He said that ADFs are very sensitive, and there was a chance that I could add too much salt and it would be best to try this first. So I picked up some water conditioner that is also antiviral, some food that my frog might actually have a chance of getting since the other fish have been eating the reptile sticks, and I'm going to hope for the best. I'm moving my second long finned rosy barb into the tank today since she's completed her round of Melafix for her torn fins and she's healing nicely. So if something goes wrong with Mr. Short and she needs to be isolated, I'll have someplace to put her. But now we're just hoping for the best! If she ends up staying healthy, I may get another ADF, but I may just leave it at one.

Thanks for all the help. :) I'll keep you updated.

salt is used by some. it its use, outside brackish tanks, should be restricted to treating those problems that salt can fix. but should not be used as a tonic! more often than not, salt, will cause problems for your fish. and in the case of the ADF, though it can take a small amount of salt, there is no indication that it does any good whatsoever. its use is driven by sales, not any benefit your stock may gain. a good way to think of it is "fishkeepers snake oil".
as for the beta, salt will not adversely affect it.

Thanks, boboboy. That's exactly what the guy at the LFS told me. :) He was extremely helpful, and very knowledgeable. That LFS has my business from now on! :good:

I'll try not to use salt anymore. The LFS salsman told me it would help the frog and fish. I guess I won't trust them anymore. I could have killed my frog and fish!

dont get me wrong, salt can be a real help, its just not something to use all the time.

it may be worth doing a forum search using "salt", this will perhaps give you a broader view of the subject.
