I have a very nice one of these but he is a right bully. Chases just about everything in the tank including 9 inch clown loaches.

would he be better of in a shoal or would they end up like the mafia

Do you mean Red Tailed Shark or rainbow shark? If red tailed, mine is fairly friendly, although he is still less than 2 inches long. He is in a 60L with fast swimming danios and barbs while I setup a larger tank. Definitely do not get another. They don't like their own kind, as such are nearly extinct in the wild as they have massive troubles breeding. Make sure he has his own territory/ hiding place, they need somewhere to call their own. Same advice applies to the red finned/rainbow. Don't keep more than 1 in total i.e don't get a RTBS and a rainbow, same result. They don't get on with anything that looks like them...

I think webber555 has covered most things. my only comment is tank size. these guys never get much over 7-8 inches, but need lots of room. anything less than 50ukg is, probably, going to cause problems with a mature RTS or even Rainbow.

when these guys get "a cob on", they seem to bully everything.

as an aside, the RTS is now listed EW (extinct in the wild) in the red book.

Epalzeorhynchos frenatum is the name and i have just realised that the flying fox's are Epalzeorhynchos too and i know from experience these two do not mix. Silly me as the foxes where given to me and i did not think :/
