So I was thinking about purchasing a really nice fish for my 21st birthday and, to be honest, I've become totally facinated with Red Dragons. Can anyone tell me what I should be looking for in one of those? I only know a tiny bit about them, like how their scales differ and whatnot. Any help would be much appreciated!

I'm confused...Red Dragon is a type of betta right? Wouldn't they be the same as other bettas? Or am I just being a retard?

Red Dragon is a color pattern of bettas. Mugen, I don't believe I've seen any of this color at any petstores, so you might have go to a breeder. I would look on Aquabid (http://www.aquabid.com) and if you see one you like, check the seller's feedback.

Also, I believe you can post here with the sellers user name and folks that have ordered betta's online might be able to let you know if they've had any experience with the particular user.

Most bettas on Aquabid do come over seas, so the fish would be shipped to what's called a "transhipper" (so if you see 2 fees for shipping that's why). The transhipper will make sure your betta is okay, give him/her a few days of rest (this is from what I've read before not experienced first hand) and then send him to you. When you do have him shipped if you live where it is cold make sure to request that a heat pack is used and be sure you pick overnight shipping. That is, _not_ priority (2-3 days) mail.

Hope this helps!!

Correct me if I'm wrong everyone...

Do you mean in terms of show standards? If so, first of all you have to specify what tail type you are talking about as the body shape and fin shape matters just as much as its color.

I'm not a big fan of red bettas in general but I like dragons. As far as I know, there is no formal standard for them yet so they might be classed as 'light bicolors'. In this class, contrast between the fin and body color is desireable and it's best that there is no mixing of the colors (so look for a fish with the bright metalic body but none of that color leaking into the fins and no red leaking into the body either). The two colors must be the only ones on the fish (so, say, irridescent green wash is undesireable). I don't know how well dragons do in bicolor classes as body color is judged based on existing color standards. If your red dragon doesn't have a completely white (or other solid light color) body and perhaps more 'leaking' into the fins, it may fit better into a metallic category though - so then what you are after changes entirely :p.

If you are just after a pet, just pick one that seems healthy and happy and catches your eye!

:D Thanks for all of the diverse info. I wasn't really looking for show/pet-specific info.. was just kinda curious about people's opinions. Also, thanks for the info on the transhipping. I got a DT female that way once and totally got shafted because I didn't realize there was that fee. x_x Now I know better!
