hi.newbie to the site so hi to everyone.i introduced a couple of red claw crabs to my tank,
everything was fine for a few weeks then they both died within a couple of days(gutted.i
took a water sample to the pet shop and all was ok.they could get out of the tank and sometimes
used to sit up by the light.the pet shop assured me they would be fine in a normal tropical
tank and wouldnt require brackish water?????????the only other fish in the tank were
guppies, has anyone experienced this before?any advice will be gratefully recieved.thanks

Hi, i recently had the same happen to me, i only had 1 in my tank but he was fine for about 2 weeks, like you said he could get out, he used to sit up by my lights too and could get out easy too, my water was fine too but sadly he died for no reason too, this might not help but the same problem happened to me? weird i thought

They should be kept in slightly brackish water, they also shouldn't be kept with fish.

They need lots of accessible land, I think at least 50/50 land vs water. And the environment outside of the water should be kept quite humid.

Aswell as this they need to be specially fed, they are omnivorous so should be given a varied diet of meaty foods (eg. cichlid pellets/prawn), veggie foods (eg. algae wafers and courgette) and supplemented with calcium for when they shed their shell and need to grow a new one.

I'm not the expert on crabs, there are a few people on here who really know their stuff! But I do know for a fact that they shouldn't be kept with fish and that if you followed the above info you would have a MUCH MUCH higher success rate with them.

I had crabs by them self, 2 died, 1 didnt die, so I moved to my tropical tank and he has been going for at least a year now

Azeron - Did they have a land area? What were you feeding them? Had you cycled the water section of their tank? How often were you doing water changes?

thanks for your replys, ive been on you tube today, some say brackish, some not, most say other fish are fine,im
feeding mine frozen bloodworm and crab cuisine which they gobble it down no probs.to be honest every opinion
seems to differ.one guy says he has had his for a couple of years in a normal tropical tank.i will just have
to see what happens this time.
