Recommendations

Hi

I am currently on the lookout for 2 things and hoped that people here could advise me.

I require an external filter with a decent output for my 50gal tank and I could do with getting my hands on a few half decent yet cheap thermometers for my tanks.

Can anybody make recommendations for either?

Personally I`d recommend a Fluval 305 (your tank is approx 230L, is that right??) as an external filter:

any thing in glass do not buy the thermometers that black and stick on the side of the tank as they just tell you the temp of the glass and not the water

Yes thats the thing I'm trying to escape from. My previous digital thermometer gave up the ghost and I'm struggling to find it anywhere now.

Thanks for your help. I often wonder though, would I benefit more from buying a 1000lph external over a 1000lph internal?
I suppose the external could carry more filter media could it?

The externals do tend to hold more media which of course is a bonus but the biggest benefit (I think) is that an external doesn`t take up any room inside your tank, it can be stored in a cupboard under your tank...therefore looks much tidier

From personal experience I`d recommend the Fluval filters every time

Ebay is the best place to get one at a good price, the other members may have some website recommendations that could be good on price too

i like internals the juwels are great but i have now gone to externals now as the problem with in internals is when u clean them the junk goes back in the tank. hence the external.externals hold loads of filter media just remember witch ever filter u go for remember 3 types of filteration bio chemecal and mechanical. hope this helps

IMO a 305 wont be enough for a 50G. I use a 405 on my 30G and that perfect. On a 50G i would go for a Fluval FX5 that will give you alot better filtration so water quality is easier to keep.

I was going to say the 405 but thought it may be a bit much, guess it all depends on how heavy the stocking is

Some people say yes some people say no. Its you own preference really. I always aim for 10X turnover and never had a problem with over kill so far. IMO i would go for atleast a 405 on a 55G but some people think tats a overkill.
