Recomended Fish

Afternoon....

My new tank is currently settling down, and doing a cycle without fish...
I would like to have a couple of breeds of Shrimp and also introduce fish, but i would like a fair amount of plant matter in there..

I dont want too many fish, just some small ones that dont eat plants, could you guys recommend me some?

Hi Parky, how far along in your cycle are you?

People often ask for recommendations for fish, and that's always a really difficult question to answer, because there are so many variables, and everyone's tastes are different.

Firstly, you need to say what size and capacity your tank is, and also an indication of your likely pH - do you live in a hardwater or softwater area?

I suggest you take a look around your various local retailers, note down the names of some of the fish species that appeal to you, and post them up. There'll be loads of people telling you what can and can't work with those species.

To just say "recommend me a fish", it's too broad a question.

Cheers TLM, and yes i admit it was a "how longs a piece of string" type of question...
Ive only had the water in the take circulating for 4-5 days, so im no where near the correct water as yet.. Im happy with any shoaling small fish really, it isnt the biggest tank ive ever had, but space is a premium. And thinking about it more, the PH would come into play, when deciding on fish...

Are you adding household ammonia? Or have you been told to fill the tank up and set the filter going and just leave it?

Cycling a filter is perhaps something you need to have a read up on mate, link in my signature to the beginners sectionis stuffed full of information, i would have a good read.

Tizer- was told to fill the tank with water and set the filter and heater going, when up to temp, add a few plants and check the PH levels in a couple of days when everything is settled. I have added a solution to the tap water to condition it, think it was to remove the Chlorine trace out of the water.

your not going to have any ammonia from doing that... you'v done everything right but you need ammonia to start the cycle can be in the form of 1 fish or household ammonia depending as you said your not doing a fish in cycle you should get some ammonia in there

the decaying plants might provide a little...

Then you were given duff information and you most certainly do need to have a read of the beginners forum and absorb as much information as you can. Cycling a filter can take several weeks and a fishless cycle using household ammonia is highly recommended. Again, all info is in the beginners resource section.
