Hi folks
I've got a Jewel Rio 180 and I want to get an external filter to supplement the internal, as I don’t want the bother of removing it and getting and fitting more of the bark effect backing for it. I’ve got the standard jewel cabinet for it and I would prefer a filter that fits in one of the cupboards, although I don’t mind removing the shelf. I understand some brands of filter won’t fit.

Has anyone got experience of what will and won’t be suitable?

Thanks
Cathy

I use the tetratec ex1200 on mine. It will fit in the middle section but I just keep mind beside the tank. There's a member on here who covered some cheap board in a nice wallpaper and used magnetic catches to attach it to the middle opening on the stand. It looks REALLY nice!

What fish are in this tank? The flow needs of say a Betta splendens ("Siamese Fighter Fish") against say my Chaetostoma milesi (a "Rubbernose Plec") would be very different, in a 180l this would be something like 800-1000lph real turnover (quoted marketing figures unusually exaggerate flow in a mature filter full of media) versus 1800-3600lph. This flow does not need to be completely provided by filtration, it can be from powerheads too.

If you do not have buget limits, I would suggest an Eheim 2078, which can provide ~1100lph running full pelt, but it can be toned right down. If at some time you had a tank upgrade, this filter could quite happily work in something upto a ~400l tank.

If you are after a cheap but functional filter, an All Pond Solutions 2000EF could work, using all the spraybar modules will reduce the real flow down to <900lph (I get ~1200lph using no spraybars).

I do have a betta in mine ;) (he is a bit of a bad-a though :p)

A fluval 305 fits in the cupboard, but that's about it. I reckon the 405 would go in too. Most externals are too big to fit.

Just zebra danios at the moment. So they could put up with a bit of a blast!

Will both of these fit in the cupboard (or the bit in-between)? I have got dogs so I really need to keep the pipework away from them. 'Sitting by the side of the stand' isn't something I want to risk.

i'll go with almostawsum, he recommend the tetratec ex1200 to me and external hydor 300w heater, AMAZING items work perfect ... i had an initial problem with the powerhead the prime button jammed, its was flowing so i called tetratec on freephone number in germany, 3 days later new powerhead arrived, they asked no question just apologised, i phone to say thanks and asked do they sell extension pieces to spray bars to which they replied they will send free of charge!!!!

so customer services is the best ive ever encountered in anything and i work in sales and deal with companies such as HP, brother, LG, sony, etc and these are amazing.

BUY a tetratec ex1200 mate
