Hey everybody!

I have a decently heavily planted almost 2 gallon bowl...it stays at a constant 72 degrees usually...never goes under that..I have seen people keep shrimp in NPT bowls before. Would keeping some red cherry shrimp in here be a possibility?

Thanks!
Meg

This is one of those questions where I have to answer yes and no to. Yes, it is possible but no, I don't recommend it. Shrimp are quite sensitive to changes in water parameters and quality and do best in a stable environment. I am not sure the bowl will provide this for them without a lot of interaction on your part. They do okay in a pretty good range of temps. I know some sites say as low as 65 though personally I wouldn't go that low as it affects metabolism when you do. Really stability is the key with pH, temp, hardness.

Does that make sense?

Yes it does make sense..thank you!

Is it possible with a lot of care? Or just no? And if not, is there anything you can think of that I could put in there?

I put it this way...it is possible but not best practice.
If you still have this tank they would probably be much happier in there.

I do still have that tank, but a few disasters later and it looks different now...plus, I wouldn't put them in there, I have bettas in there..

Can you think of anything I could do with this bowl then?

You said it's 2 gallons? I think it might be a nice bowl with some plants and perhaps a single snail in it. Can you post a photo? There might be room for some kind of a filter which would change things.

If you liked snails, a couple of nice apple snails or nerite snails (there are also some amazing snails coming out of Sulawasi) could go in the bowl, but snails can make as much waste as a group of shrimp so once again water quality can become an issue.
Sadly bowls aren't generally the best for fish being round and usually placed where the bowl can be viewed from all angles the fish get no privacy or place they feel they can relax.
The only thing I can think of for a bowl with such limited volume would be real micro critters like fairy shrimp, the fresh water equievelent of Brine shrimp. Possible even a sheild shrimp or two.

I like the fairy shrimp idea....could I feed them to my baby bettas?

There is a place for hiding in the bowl (small piece of wood, many plants) and it is up against a wall, but I still see what you mean...there are lots of fast growing stem plants (which help with ammonia), but I still don't want to put anything in there that could be harmed.. I definitely don't want to break it down...it's a cute bowl with plant substrate

All fish would gladly scoff down fairy shrimp, in parts of America there are even pretty green varieties of fairy shrimp.
I know some people collect fairy shrimp from local water ways but I think in some states this practice is illigal, otherwise some searches on the internet should help you track down fairy shrimp suppliers

That's a great idea, thank you! Hopefully my mom would go for it! I think that my baby bettas would appreciate some live food over frozens :)

She said I can do it :) my only concern is how would I clean it? I wouldn't want to suck up a bunch of live fairy shrimp

Honestly I would say small water changes every couple of days...like 8 ounces twice a week (how simple is that just use a cup) would be enough cleaning.

That sounds like a plan! Thanks for all your help! I'm sure all the plants will help in keeping the water clean, too..they did for the betta that was in there

Be sure to post pics when it's done. We want to see what you come up with.

This is what the bowl looks like (well, what it looked like a few months ago...the plants have grown out a lot since)

I'm thinking about doing some semi-aquatic plants in here... Think that would be fun and kinda neat...maybe something like mondo grass? Any suggestions to make the bowl look better? I wasn't really trying when I put it together the first time...I just threw stuff in it from my other tanks as an emergency setup for a rescue betta at the last minute..
