Its stupid, thick people makeing coments about something they no nothing about.

Basicaly saying, fish and animals should be left where thay are from and not in cages etc . I work at chester zoo, i know why we keep animals and how we do the best we can to give them everything they could possibly need and try to recreat thier natural enviroments, All to educate dum people that its down to consumarism that these animals are here!!!!!!

Sorry but people are very nieve indeed. The world is in a mess becasue its our fault, people forget where thier grooming products etc.

Take palm oil. This matariel is used in cosmetics. It down to people wanting these products that Arang u tans are being killed every day. We can expect to see the great apes extinct in the wild in 10 years.

Cheers,
Graeme.

i take your point. but if you look at the fish killed, one way or another, by us FISHKEEPERS it makes you wonder!

I haven't listened to the link but it sounds like the PITA people. Their believe is that all animals should be free and that we should not even have pets.

perhaps it may be worth listening to the show before passing comment, and apportioning blame!!! and just for the record the correct name is PETA!!!! and you will have to listen to it to find out if your right.

I have been to the linked page but there isn't a link there to listen to the discussion. Maybe I'm missing something. What do I need to do to hear it?

Click the link, and then look to the right of the page. It has a box with listen again, and the days fo the week listed. Click mondays. You may have to listen to the whole show. Something to have on in the background while you surf the net.

I really hate topics like this because it's hard to find out what I believe and I'm definately a hypocrite. I keep fish, but I think animals belong in the wild unless they're rare and have a breeding plan (like, say, Snow Leopards) or are injured. In a way I agree with PETA, but I think they take it too extreme. Sometimes pets are good - dogs couldn't survive in the wild, nor could most tame animals - but wild, intelligent animals should stay where they are. :/

Still can't get it to work. Must be doing something wrong or my laptop doesn't have the proper players installed. I clicked Listen Again and a new window comes up but when I click play, nothing happens. No sound, nothing. It shows volume turned all the way down but when I click + to increase it, the scale doesn't move. At bottom of browser window, it says "Error on Page"

We had protesters at the zoo today!!

Its a topic that could be given huge debate. As far as zoos and public aquariums go. They are here for education about loss of habitat and the threat that of various species, this is usually due to the hand of humans. We keep them captive for the sake of the species, because one day they may be extinct in the wild.

For our hobby, we in part do good and bad. Look at galaxy rasbora, they are so popular they may now be rare in the wild due to us wanting them as pets. Not good!
Then you have several species of rasbora, of which we keep at the zoo, and to a lot of people you can see then in LFS around the UK, but they are and their environment endangered in the wild.So we educate!
Zebra plecs are rare now due to the gold mine industries, so even having jewelry can support threats to many animals!

We all have a hand to play, but activist really need to be rational about the facts.
There are advances in breeding captive ( once wild ) marine fish, this is a good step forward and hopefully reduce the threat to marine life.

It is all down to consumers, while people buy these products like shark fin soup, or cosmetics with palm oil, and even wild fish for their aquarium, there will always be a problem.

Regards,
Graeme.

Can't get the show to skip ahead, but I imagine it's something like this article from PETA. Granted there are plenty of fish in the trade that really aren't suited to most common home aquaria and very poor advice given for care, not to mention the problems caused by the collection of many fish, especially saltwater reef fish, but a blanket statement like "aquariums are cruel" doesn't help matters at all. Many fish are perfectly suited to aquaria, but so long as people don't have reason to care they'll keep goldfish in bowls. Perhaps if they'd provide more useful information and make an effort to actually educate people beyond "bigger is better" and "water changes are good" I'd feel differently about PETA but they never seem to make any sort of effort for anything that isn't warm and fuzzy beyond saying everyone should be vegan and all animals should be free.

It's a shame that PETA is so extreme, it's a good cause but they way they treat it, the only people that they'll really attract to their cause are the ones that already agree with them.
