*quick* - New Fx5 Question

Hi all, i just got my new fx5 in the mail today, and currently there is no fish in my tank, only water and sand, which i added yesterday. So as you can guess my tank is very cloudy! I just had a real quick question, i do not currently have any filter media to put into the 3 Fx5 baskets, and i was wondering, if i am only running the filter for a couple days to clean the water from the cloudy sand, is it necessary i have the media in the baskets?? Of course i will buy it in a couple days after it is complete, just wondering if i can start it now.

Yes, you can run it without, when you can just add some ceramic rings to the baskets, but it can and does run fine with just the sponges.

okay, thanks a lot for the quick response. and i assume when it is done cycling the sand, just rinse the sponges?

Yep, you can rinse them out either in tank water or normal, depending on what cycling your doing. OH and just to add, in case you werent aware, the FX5 turns itself off for 2 minutes after initial start to purge any air out and will restart again after the two minutes are up, so dont panic, it also does it every 24 hours - you may already know this, but some people panic if they dont.

haha yeah, i knew it took 2 minutes right after plugging it in, then it stopped, released air and i didnt realize it would take another two minutes, so gave me a little scare but nothing major haha. thanks a lot though for the help.

Any idea how long it should take to clean the water with sand that was only washed decently? 125 gallon tank.

oh and wow, it is so quiet!


edit: oh and sorry one more question, i put my hand over the intake source and it doesn't seem to be particularly strong, is this normal?

wont take long depending on how well you've washed the sand , i did a bad job on the sand on mine and the fx5 still cleard it within 24 hours

oh the intake bit , put your hand on the outlett if thats firing out water then you're good

hey fx5 are the best investment in my oppinion,ive had mine over two years and love it,so easy to maintain and does a great job,as you said so quiet,
