Hi All,

I set up my new tank yesterday and put some established filter media in the filter from my other tank. many on here said that i could put my fish straight in but i decided to leave the water overnight to heat up. The water is at the right temperature now and i just ran some tests on it. All the levels appear to be right and out of interest i ran an ammonia test on the old tank. The results of this were off the scale (i thinks its overstocked). Shall i move the fish and the established filter to the new tank cos it appears that the water is far far better quality?? This way i'm getting the fish out of the ammonia filled water

thoughts?

Thanks

Mark

If it won't be overstocking go ahead, I presume the new tank is bigger. Move the filter across aswell, this way you have all of your filter media working over 2 filters in (?? a bigger tank).

Hi,

It would probably help if you can post the stats of your old tank, and also the stocking & size of tank.

If you have transferred filter Media to your new tank from the old, then the water stats would be showing much better because you do not have the "fish load" to compromise the available bacteria in the filter media. I think if you transfer all of your fish over to the new tank you will have the same problem, as the fish waste will be more than your new filter will be able to cope with.

Best to post up all of your water stats and stocking, that way you will get the best help based on your current circumstances.

Hope this makes sense

I moved all the fish over and they all seem to be doing fine. I have moved them from a 100 litre to a 260 litre and taken the old filter across so i now have two running in the new tank. I cant remember the stats but ammonia was very high on the scale as the old tank was overstocked

Hi

Just keep an eye on Ammonia/Nitrite levels in the new tank, if you notice any readings for these you will need to do water changes to bring the levels down. As although your fish have a lovely new home which is much larger, the established bacteria in your 2 filters may still not be able to cope with the fish waste (as the Ammonia readings in the old tank were high and you are using the exact same filter media in the new tank with the same fish load). This suggests that the Ammonia munching Bacteria where not at a level required to support the fish load you had.

Good luck with your new set up :fish: and would love to see some pics when you can.
