Quick Check Before I Add Any Fish

we struggled with golden apple snails and I think it was cos of the high ph (Ian will know) so you might have to rethink that, the rest of it sounds good though :good:

apple snails aparently like harder water, wich we don`t have their shells started to disolve. (or in my case eaten by an angel.

but your stocking sounds fine you should fully stock withing 12 hours of the big watter change after the fishless cycle, so get all the tetras and the loaches in today

How big a water change should I be doing?

Rich

i did about 90%

because after the fishless cycle you have really high nitrates and these need to be removed before you add fish.....

the best way to do that is with a huge watter change, then as soon as the water hits thr ight temp again its time to add fish

Thanks Ian.

I obviously havent cycled it then, If that is the case then how come my readings are all pretty accurate?

Rich

because fish can live in declorinated tap water....

however not for long,
you need to build up a colony of bacteria in your filter that break down fish waste such as amonia....

the breaking down of amonia also releases another chemical that is also harmfull to fish nitrIte

when this has been broken down it produces nitrate this is much less harmfull to your fish, and should be removed with weekly partial water changes of anything up to 25%

this thread should help you to understand how it all works

if you need any more advice or any help understanding things just ask

  Thanks for that again Ian. I have been adding Aqua Safe and Cycle though if that makes any difference?

I wil go and look at that link shortly.

Would it be quicker for me to start again from scratch?

Rich.

if you`ve been adding cycle you may have a smal culture already in the tank all though the quality and actual benifit of such products is unknown,

i would get some liquid amonia, and cycle it as that article says. if you have been adding cycle and if the product actaly works (as i said it seems a bit of a grey area,) then your cycle may be cut down....

Ian,

Thanks for all your help. I really appreciate it. I am glad I asked now although I do feel like a bit of a plank.

Thanks Again,

Rich

Don't feel a plank Rich, the whole cycling issue can be very confusing. Just lucky that you posted your question and have had some excellent advice before you put all your fish in and they might have died :(
