Well, it depends on the fish. Egglayers can't be pregnant obviously- see my previous post- but sometimes the female will look fatter when she is ready to lay eggs. Both female and male may take on deeper breeding colours, depending on the species.
With livebearers, the female will get fat, often very fat, and in common livebearers (guppies etc) the dark spot near her anus will grow large and darken.
