Just read a post you made advising of setting up a new tank copied and pasted this bit

1) I believe the newest StressCoat+ (?) but after years of using stresscoat (and its fine really) I've decided Seachem Prime is the best and I've started using and recommending that for during cycling. After a tank is mature I recommend switching to pond dechlor as the cheapest for volume water changes.

the bit you mention on pond dechlor is interesting me.

I purchased one today by mistake or so i thought, on the back of the bottle it says " For use in ornamental ponds only"

What is the worst that can happen if i add the chlorine remover?

Hi Bugsvile,

The worst that can happen is absolutely nothing. Pond dechlor is exactly the same stuff as aquarium dechlor, only more concentrated and less expensive (try working out how much it would cost to dechlorinate a pond with Stress Coat and you'll see why).

The warning, I imagine, is just to cover their backs.

Cheers :good:

Cheers bactotropical, i like the answer and i see what your saying, i just dont want to mess things up with the fishless cycle that could set me back to the begining again.

The point to ornamental only is easy, they have not gone to the trouble of testing it and licensing it for food fish use. If you farm fish as food and sell them to the public, it would be illegal to use that particular dechlor product.

Gotta agree with BTT (thats a poem)... he's one of the ones I learned lots of this good stuff from!

If you picked up some pond dechlor then use it, it'll be fine! I'd dose 1.5x but not over 2x during the cycling.

OM47, very interesting detail there, never knew that!

I have done a little farming and have learned what the labels on pesticides and similar products mean. The ornamental use only means it is untested for food crops. Even worse is that some chemicals, actually most of them, will list the specific food crop where they have been tested. If you bought a bug spray meant for apples, it might be illegal to use it on pears, for instance.

I have been using pond dechlor in my fish tanks for a while with no worries, fish are quite happy. I am also using it in 2 fishless cycles and it is going fine too
