Question For People In The Uk

I know I am not in the UK but my take on dead fish is that casualties happen. I generally don't get two upset if I see a freshly dead fish in a tank at the pet store. Heck, i have come home to dead fish in my tank occasionally. It happens. I get mad when I see decaying dead fish, because that tells me they are not monitoring their tanks.

They are one of the Boomerang fish... you can order them in because they sell well, but you can be guaranteed that at least 50% will come back to you! If not with all their babies too.

Jewel Cichlids
Red Tail Black Sharks/Ruby/Albinos
Synodontis
Plecs
Convicts
I can't imagine why A jewel would be a boomerang fish. I only almost took mine back....btu we came to an agreement, so she stayed. Fish is crazy.

I've bought several fish from P@H. One of my hardiest female bettas came from P@H she has been through two white spot outbreaks, a mystery illness that killed everyone in the tank but her and she's still with me :). I have two P@H locally but one I wouldn't touch with a barge pole, the other I'll happily go to. It all depends on the quality of yours in all honesty.

Pets at home - Whos bought fish from them?
What kinds do they have?
Are they healthy?
Are they pricey?

I've purchased many fish from the P@H I work at, only ever lost a couple of guppies, which I could've got replaced but they were an impulse buy.
We stock mainly just your common, easy to keep fish, we are mainly visited by people who are new to the hobby, not by people who have been in the hobby for years and are looking for something "different".
I would say well over 95% of our fish are healthy, we have a quarantine tank to isolate fish that are ill, I rarely (can't even recall the last time) have customers come in complaining that the fish we have sold them has infected their stock. New deliveries of fish are checked before they are accepted, and any that look "dodgy" are rejected. Tanks are treated with myxazin the day before and day of deliveries, they are tested using an API test kit the day after, and have always read at 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 10-80 nitrates. The only issues we ever have are with fish that I have a suspician are wild caught, and if we do have ongoing issues we will stop stocking them and try something else.
Price wise all rival LFS are all similarly priced.
There is a Swallow Aquatics located quite close to this P@H and I regularly have customers say they much prefer us to them. :)

10-80ppm nitrate? seriously? On a casco system? :shifty: systems shouldnt be reading nitrates at all...

Yep, why would they not read nitrates? Our auto-top up feeds straight from the water mains. They started at 10ppm when I took over the system almost a year ago, and have been slowly increasing up until this point.

Well my lfs said hes willing to pay me for the convict as their really in demand and they do not have the time to breed them, so they will take some of me, The rest ill give to family and friends who already agreed to take them, and I know their tank can house them.
Anyone ever heard of WildWoods in enfield?
Going there tomorrow to pickup a breeding pair of albino and normal convicts.

I have bought fish from them, but I think its hit and miss if you get a store where the staff are knowledgeable and really able to help.

Some have larger aquatic areas, generally where they also keep marine, and the staff there are knowledgeable. I know our local one suffers dreadfully with white spot.. but I think its the whole set up really I am sure they just get bulk deliveries and have to deal with all that comes with rapid throughput of fish.

Our local one use the same nets for all tanks and if they have to take ornaments out to get the fish, they are just put on the floor!! Along with the nets once they have finished with them! We even commented that maybe they should get a trolley or something.. We bought 4 cory's the smallest one died of a fungal infection but the rest were fine.

We've now found a new supplier, really knowledgeable, 2 month quarrantine before putting stock for sale.. more expensive.. but as you build up expensive stock.. defintitely worth it.
