Hi, how many of you when quaranting fish from fish store, use anti parasite and anti bacteria meds, and if you do what do you use, UK only, or do you just observe I was thinking of giving them 2 weeks.

I only use meds when there's an identifiable disease or parasite to treat. This is true of all situations, not just quarantine.

I've never medicated as a prevention. As far as time to quarantine? Most say 2 weeks to 4 weeks. That's the range I've used. If I have no need to use the qt tank otherwise I usually would go a month. If any problems that restarts the time again.

When I have new fish, they are put in quarantine tanks for about a week before they'll enter their final tank without any meds. Only when I know for sure or when I'm in doubt that those fish may have an illness or something else, I'll treat them first during the quarantine period.

Right now, I'm keeping a group of cardinal tetras and neon tetras in quarantine for a friend of mine. Recently he got those as well but they died off within a week. The ones I purchased for him have already been a week in quarantine at my place and are all doing well. But he overfed them which made the ammonia in the tank raise in a very short time. His water has been tested now and the situation seems okay. So, he can pick these fish up to move to his tank this week.

I'm more serious on QT if the fish are famed species. There, I can QT for up to 6 weeks. I also use QT tanks that are large enough to become full time tanks, if I so choose. I think it's important to avoid poorly set up QT tanks that can allow disease to develop where it wouldn't have in a decent, cycled set up.

With wild sourced fish that have recently arrived, I go with 2 to 3 weeks, but if they spent a long time in a shop or at the importer's, they get a month minimum.

I never use medications unless I can clearly identify what I'm treating for.

I believe in a long QT for the true meaning of quarantine, 40 days (6 weeks of health). I used to treat my botia loaches with a couple rounds of levamisole or later, flubendazole. Both are fairly gentle, but the thinking back 20 years ago, then it was more of paranoia for "loach wasting" or internal parasites...it may have helped, I only lost 1 loach to some wasting condition, no matter what I drug tried to help him.

I no longer have a QT tank & I rarely get new fish
