I have a 55g planted lightly with 2 angels, neon tetras 1 beta, 1 pearl gournami, 2 glofish, 20 ghost shrimp and 4 ramshorn snails.
i would like to get a puffer fish has any one had a puffer in a community tank and have it get along and not nip fins of other fish?
can any body help me and let me know what species of puffer would do best in my tank thanks.I am also getting a german blue ram next week.

Puffers are really only suitable for a species tank.

Yah i wouldn't do it. As cute and cool as puffers are, putting them in a commie tank could lead to murder and mayhem.

Good excuse for getting another tank though ;) If you went for a dwarf puffer, you'd only need a five or ten gallon one :good:

yes. they are really aggressive. i have 3 in a 10 gallon and they are nippy. unless you want your angelfish to get nipped, you should avoid the puffer. :good:

i have read that the south american puffer does good in a community as long as they are feed and not hungry they wont nip the fins of other fish

i thought puffers were ok in community, a mate a 2 in his and they are fine with the others

Let's not forget that most puffers require brackish water to thrive in the long-term.

Everything I've read about puffers is that species-only is best.

Ultimately it's your choice what to do with your aquarium. You've asked for advice, you've got the advice, it's your choice whether to take it or ignore it. I hope it works out, whichever way you go. :good:

back in my early days of fishkeeping i had a puffer in a small community. it decimated my shrimp, harrassed and nipped my cories, and would go after fish 5 times its size.

he was properly awesome though.

Way back in the 1970's (when I was still a beginner) I gave them a go in community with medium to large Cichlids...... They actually bit chunks out of my 5" Blue Acara.. I will never recommend them for anything else than species tank..... That is in my experience......

I have had the occasional South American Puffer work out, but not with Angels, Pearl Gouramis, Bettas, or slow fish like that. I also had the luxury of many tanks to switch them to when it didn't work out. There is always going to be the odd exception, but as a rule I wouldn't risk it. I'm pretty sure your Ghost Shrimp would be viewed as a snack.

South American Puffers are more 'fish friendly' but i still wouldn't have them in a community tank. A species tank is far better and far safer too!

The Dwarf Puffer and South American Puffer are both freshwater species.

thanks everbody for the advice i am looking for a beautifull or oddball fish that will stand out and complete my tank i will try a sap out and if that dosnt work it will just give me an excuse to have another tank thanks again
