Well, a short while ago.........a member on TFF was offering a corner tank FREE!! to make some room.

I volunteered........I thought I might have some spare time........I don't like to just come in an veg in front of the TV after work, I thought I would give it a go.

The most-excellent-member duly replied to my begging PMs and we arranged a day to go and pick it up.

I measured the car, and as I have an estate, worked out that the tank and stand would go in with a little room each side........I even mocked up a cardboard "floor-area" of the tank to make sure........

Soooo, bank holiday monday I had some chores to run:

Pick up the tank;
Pick up a roof-box I was getting free from my brother-in-law;
Pick up the mother-in-law (not literally)...

....Set off at 08:00, arrived at the other members house on time......enjoyed a bit of a chat with him and his family, quick coffee, marvelled at the fact that he had had to take part of his doorframe off to get the tank out.. :S  .

Tank only got wedged a couple of times getting out of the door ( :*) ). Got tank and all the other very generous bits into the back of the car.........helped him out with a huge bit of Mopani that no-one wanted to pay postage for :D :D and headed out.

Got stuck in huge traffic, finally got home at 14:00 after all my errands with tank, stand, bits, roof-box and mother-in-law (complete with mother-in-law paraphernalia.....all sorts of boxes, bags and strange things).

So started the project.

Got the tank into the house OK (slightly larger door width thank goodness).

Put the tank all together when we got home and tried to see how it could have started life.

This is it with all the bits on:

The base looks like it had been added at some stage and the cover looks quite large, we did wonder if it started something like this:

low_tank.jpg

But anyway.

There are some more pics.........I will post them later.........I have started on the project as I have removed a lot of the glass and rubbed-down the base and re-stained it.

However, like all good projects outside problems are taking up time. I have been informed that I am about to be made redundant...........so have been busy trying to justify my job....   ......

........and I am also doing a management diploma at Loughborough University (part-time) and have a report due in tomorrow morning, which I should have been doing for the last month, but am trying to cram in the last couple of weeks.....

OH well, more later....................and thanks to the-wolf for the tank and bits!!!!

Well the obvious question - what are you going to put in it?

I can't wait to see more. :)

55 gallons apparently

However, still negotiating with my wife about where it will go.

.......am hoping that it will look good enough to take pride of place in the lounge.......however that will mean moving the 36" tank out of the lounge, and possibly not using it!!!! That means I will have to have a move-round of my fish!.... :D

it looks great! you should defenatly post som pics later when you get it up and running with som fish! do you have any plans as to what's going in yet?

Great tank.....Wohooooooooooooooooooo

Im looking for something bigger, i currently have a 90 litre hex tank, i would prefer a juwel, or something similar, not a corner tank, as i dont have any spare corners in my room now Lol

Would love to see more pics, when you have it all set up ;)

Right-ho.......

.....module coursework now done and 1 copy sent via email, 1 copy sent via courier to Loughborough University.

I can now concentrate on getting the tank back together.

This was the tank a couple of days after getting it.

Took the two front panels off. It is amazing what you learn after you have started a project like this........

......guy in the lfs said "......i would have just cut the silicon out from the glass, leaving the top and bottom silicon there, so that all you had to do was put new silicon into the gaps.......keeping the integrity of the tank....".

..oh well....by that time I had taken most of it apart.

bits_of_glass.jpg

Various bits of glass off and cleaned. These were mainly in the strenthening bits around the top rim of the tank.

2_facets_cleaned.jpg

Front two facets off........but still to be cleaned, they can be seen leaning against the stand.

all_front_off.jpg

Right..........that is enough glass off for now.........

Now to clean all the grot and old silicon off it.

It was at this point that I wondered if I had gone too far.............

......and yes, I do keep looking at the corner tank for sale on this forum and thinking it might be easier just to go and pick that up!!...... :D :D

....but this is a project after all.......... :alien:

Took the stand unit doors off, rubbed it all down, tidied up a few knocks etc, this is it halfway through the process:

sanded_unit.jpg

Cleaned the remaining glass, took some bits of glass off the top which had pushed the height up, but looked a little manky...

Cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, then rinsed by hose in the garden:

This is it back on stand (now stained), with a couple of the front pieces of glass in:

More later perhaps.......................

Hints:

Thinners or white spirit are good to use to remove the silicon traces............and have lots of blades, scalpels etc to take the old bits off.

And white spirit with wire-wool removes all traces and doesn't scratch the glass :D

Warning.........however, these chemicals are very toxic to fish, so everything then needs to be cleaned, then thoroughly rinsed....

Very cool! I wisdh someone around here was offering a tank for freee......hmhmh...

Hi Ava_Banana :)

What an ambitious project! :hyper:

It's going to be a show piece when you have finished with it though. I'm looking forward to seeing pictures of it then. :D

Fantastic project, Looks like a good one.
Looks to me like its bigger than a 55gallon. Maybe 85gallon. It looks just a bit smaller than mine. mines a 350litre.
Good luck with the project and keep us posted.
