Right in a bit of a dilemma - my two Heros Severus had a massive fight this morning the new ones side fins (scientific names escape me) you know the flippers are shredded as is the top of her dorsal fin she also has a few bite marks on her face but not too bad. My older Severus has a loose scale and slightly more worrying one of the rays on her dorsal fin is poking out!! She does not seem to phased by it but I am concerned to say the least. Any suggestions on what I should do regarding her?

Next problem - the tank I was going to buy is no longer available Im not naming anyone but serious let down after two weeks of planning on my part and on the assumption I was getting this tank soon I had my stock plan planned (more a less) and everything - least to say I had bought the second Severus as a bit of an impulse based on the new tank coming so now it looks like Im going to be without the upgrade for some time as due to home circumstances (basically a flooded apartment) I dont have the time to look for the right priced right sized right colour right height etc and since I dont have the ability from my other half to compromise I dont seem to have a choice in getting the new tank. The one I was going to buy was planned before all this happened and would slot into the chaos of moving to temp accommodation etc and in a tank twice the size I should hope two sevs could co exist quite well and up until today I thought it would only be an other week or two till the bigger tank arrived.

Which both add up to one thing - I have to get rid of one of my Severums - GUTTED it does not even into it. Heros Severus are incredibly rare, one of my favorite fish and even rarer to find a second female for my female to prevent breeding. And then theres the money of the fish its self £30 for the fish her self, £20 petrol there and back £5 for the poly box and drip acclimatise stuff £20 for the resulting tank divider I got as a back up incase things went wrong and have now had to make and use. So all in all £75 down the drain and a beautiful fish out of my collection. It has to be the new one because Ive nto had her as long so not as attached I am annoyed at my first severus though because the tank should be big enough for 2 six inch generally placid cichlids to co exist but shes just being evil.

On even more dire terms, I may have to give up all my fish completely due to the damage to the flat we are having to move out and not a clue whats going to happen to my fish tank. Possibly going to go temporarily to one of the parents houses but not thrilled about that to say the least.

Slight good news out of it is that due to the extent of the renovation required to the flat it will make the rooms a bit bigger as we can sort out a new floor plan as all walls are coming down and are just stud walls so my girlfriend has said I might be aloud a bigger tank so every cloud and all that.

So yeah any advice on what to do about the larger Severus dorsal spine would be appreciated.

Sorry to hear the bad news. How did the place flood? Was it your tank?

You just now are seeing that females are evil. Haha she might have used the other lipstick with out asking.

But so sorry to hear that. Cichlids crazy as you know not much you can do but look for a good home or try and retire it.

As for healing up your other. Extra clean water and I sware by vitamins. If you can find fish vitamins use that it will work so much better then any harsh meds. Also bring the heat up a bit. Good luck I really hope you get to keep your fish that would be awful.

The floods happened because the last people that lived above us fitted their own bathroom like in a DIY manor and did a bad job. And one of the pipes they was barely in the rubber so when ever the new family of 5 used their sink water would flow down the waste pipe and hit the concrete at the bottom which formed a puddle which then got soaked up into the insulation in our floor which then soaked into the floor boards which have now rotted. And since the walls are built on top of the floor to replace the floor they have to take out the walls.

Its just a general nightmare, but its just struck me how stuck I am with the fish now its just so devastating :(

Oh Wills I am so sorry to read this. Firstly re the dorsal fin, clean water, maybe a bit of melafix it should be fine. Jethro my pleco when I first got him he had the ends missing on his tail and fins. Secondly I have sitting in the conservatory an empty rio 400l (another one to the one in the shed) I was going to get set up in the week for the rotkeil babies. If you dont want to get rid of your fish and dont have anyone that can take the fish while the flat is sorted and you can get the fish to me I would be willing look after them for you untill the flat is sorted. With the 2 Sevs they may get on in the bigger tank, if they still didnt get on I could move one into one of my other tanks. I know its not an ideal situation as I am so far away but I would hate to see you loose the fish. The offer is there if you need it mate. :good:

Oh and with my luck if they end up being male and female and breed can I keep one of the babies

Aww thanks guys :)

Thankyou for the offer Star really appreciate it :) Had an other offer from Nobody of the Goat as well and I really really do appreciate it :D Its really picked me up knowing people are willing to do this for me :)

When I posted it I was really really down because of the damage on the sevs and the realisation that I might not keep the tank.

Ive decided to move the newer sev on I know a few people that might be able to take her near me and theres probably a chance I could get her back when we are settled. Then after that the tank should be back to normal, worse case scenario after that is that the tank goes to my girlfriends parents and they should be able to make sure the tank ticks over and I will drop by on weekends to do maintenance. Then again if problems arose out of that I would cut the stock down to just my nic and the headstanders as they are my favorites at the moment and probably the most long standing favorites.

I am pretty worried about the severus dorsal spine its like the skin over the fin has split like a hood and the bone is sticking out.

Thanks again Star I really do appreciate that offer :)

Wills, really sorry to hear about your woes. Sometimes it feels like everything is conspiring against us.

As for the dorsal, I simply agree with the others. There's not a lot to do except clean water and decent food, maybe a little something like melafix and time.
One of my uaru's has got a similar dorsal spine, which is also bent over (received from the 4 bl**dy arowana that the shop kept them with). He also has pretty much no left pectoral fin at all, and only shreds for a right pectoral (for the same reasons). However, he is doing just fine. Fins are really very resilient and our creator seems to have designed them to be able to take a lot of punishment.

BTW, you are right in that those sevs must be separated.

 You are most welcome, glad you have something sorted, but if you did need me to take some fish dont hesitate to ask. I dont think anyone on here would like to see you loose your fish, I know it was hard enough for you to make the decision to give Bailey up. I dont know what I would do without my fish

The dorsal fin should heal in time, Jethro's had bone sticking out too it healed eventually but his anal fin bones are bent (they were really bad).

Really sorry to read of your troubles, Wills :(

I agree that the Sevs should be separated permanently. If they caused that much damage to each other in such a short period of time, then I'd hazard a guess they won't ever get on, no matter how large the tank. You may have read my issues with my GT and Oscar scrapping. I tried everything to get them to live together, but my GT would actively seek my O out to hurt him, so when a fish is intent on havoc like that, I don't think it can ever work.

I hope your other Sev heals. I agree with the others, not much you can do but extra clean water and some Melafix.

Really hope you sort something out.

Hi all thanks again for the thoughts :)

Well my older sev broke through the divider last night and things seem pretty calm touch wood so far I have been at work all day but my girlfriend has been watching them and she said that they have kind of flared a few times and then settled down. The newer has been in her normal colours all day rather than showing bars as well which is a bit of a good sign.

Managed to find someone who could take her if needs be but going to give it one more week as I always judge fish settling in at that point and see how it is then.

Fingers crossed they may have sorted out who is boss!

You should have seen the tank setups I saw today while collecting "Nelly"'s old tank...

  • A 5-footer with some of Nelly's fish, looking great (at least the two Oscars and the giant Silver Dollar who looks so Pirahna/Pacu-esque).
  • A 6-footer with two species of Pirahna in, apparently the one with the black spot on its flanks is supposed to be the most aggressive in theory, but the group get on like a house on fire).
  • A 4-footer(?) with some young Pirahnas in.
  • Three baby Fire Eels in a small tank in the kitchen.
It was amazing seeing three big tank side-byside against the lounge wall!

Yeah I think your right Glen things have been better today with Daisy no longer being scared of me and coming to the glass now but both sevs are easily spooked by movement. Fins are healing nicely, also we have realised what happened with the sticking out dorsal spine, we think it happened when she was being netted :( But like I say they are both healing fast now so very happy in that regard :)
