had these 2 cichlids in my tank now for about 5 months now and for the last month or so 1 of them has been acting very sulky and gettin very snappy toward the other tank mate.....when he is hiding up his colour darkens so much he goes from a nice yellow colour to near on full black.

ive checked all tank stats and they are fine aswell as the other fish being perfectly fine which is another sign aswell.

tank mates are :

2 dalmation mollies
1 siamese fighter
4 german blue rams
1 female killi fish
1 commen plec
1 hong kong plec
and of course these 2 cichlids

here is a picture of the normall acting cichlid which is doing fine in the tank

and here is a picture of the odd acting cichlid.....an it does get a lot darker than this just t let you know.

any help would be much appreciated

How big is the tank?

To be honest, I don't know what that is. In the first shot it looks a little like an Blue Acara, could be some sort of hybrid. Second shot doesn't look anything like an Acara though, so i'm stumped.

the tank is a rekord 96 so its 96 litres. measurement are 800 x 300 x 400.

just seems strange that the other one is perfectly happy....its like they are 2 different fish lol

i have posted on here previously for an id on the fish and someone posted a pic of 1 exactly the same an it was called a red belly cichlid.....but there was 1 major difference between mine and the ones in the pic....mine dont have red bellys????

they look very similar indeed but are yellow not a grey/silver coloour unless its a bad picture....and also have a black spot hehind there eye and then a dark line whereas the ones in the picture have a dark line with no spot????

and as for mixing with tank mates its not getting bullied or anything and the other1 is doing great in the tank thats why i cant work out why this one is acting odd

not as far as i know.....not seen any eggs about the tank at all....dont even know what sex they both are??? prehaps its grumpy cos hes not getting any??? lol

yep thats true...anyhow cichlids can be like that.....my keyholes mull round on bottom never the end of the evening and sometimes in the day aswell....cichlids can be lazy b%$....

i will keep an eye out for eggs though...you never know that may be why its getting agresive.....but mains things are that its eating an tank stats are fine so why its acting like it i may never know lol

The first one looks like Aequidens Curviceps, or at least some type of Aequidens.

The second one does as well at least in the face, but those are some awesome colors, looks like Kribensis colours!

well this one took me a bit but a bit of research for Aequidens Dorsigerus will probably show your fish while reading an article about them @ cichlidae.com I saw a picture of one that looked mighty similar to your "typical" acting one, which they discribed as being in a non breeding coloration in the caption.
