Hi.
I have an outdoor pond (approx.950 gallons) and is in mostly full sun for 75% of the day.
I have a selection of very small goldfish,ghost koi,butterfly koi,and subumpkins (all about 2-3 inches long(excluding tails)
I have a "Bermuda 6000" pump in pond which pumps water to a 25watt "u.v" light, then into the "Bermuda 7500" pressurised filter, which then pumps up to a waterfall and back into the pond.
My water is almost crystal clear, and am using a couple of pouches of "barley flakes" to help with the blanket weed (they seem to be doing their job considering the amount of sun)
My problem is the amount of times i have to clean the filter sponges due to a build up of "green gunge" on them Yukkk.
I find im having to do them every 4 or 5 days>
Ive just noticed in the filter instruction booklet, that im supposed to rinse the bio balls and substrate twice a year in pond water.
Is this correct, because i understood that this is where the "healthy bacteria" grow to help combat the fish waste and convert it back to a relativly safe state.
Or maybe this is why im having to clean the foam filters so often?
Any help appreciated please.......
Forgot to add.....im also using 2 small airstones in pond too

im just about the same George&Ade about once a week for the sponges ,the bio rings i just give em a quick rinse but do clean the housing out, youl notice a lot of the green gunge is working its way down into the rings/balls (well i have) and slows the flow down ,as long as you dont thorougly clean the bio rings/balls the bacteria will be fine, the amount of algae killed off by the uv acounts for most the gunge
