Power Heads

hi all

what are power heads for, i have seen a lot on ebay and just intrested in what they for,

Power heads are for moving water. I use them to power my large sponge filters in fry grow out tanks. The inlet can be placed on the filter's lift tube instead of piping in air to an air stone. The result is a decent flow rate, that is silent in use, for your sponge filter. This is one sitting on my desk top.

I use the tapered inlet to fit into a filter like this one to get enough flow to filter a 55 gallon tank for fry.

nice. is that an old ac30PH?

powerheads are for creating circulation in your tank. while they may seem unnecessary, they can be a beneficial addition to your aquarium.
a little added circulation can be a great aid to your current filtration system.

It is a fairly new AC30. I find that I can pick a power head off e-bay for around $12 to $18 in almost any size. I tried out the AC10 and didn't like the inlet because it was hard to adapt to a filter. Many of the larger heads are easy to adapt to a filter. I am sure there are other good brands but I have no experience with them.

im partial to their larger models as well. the AC70 w/ quick filter attachment is great for water polishing. it comes with a micron cartridge, but i prefer to fill it with filter pads and poly-fill. its easier to maintain, cheap to replace, and does a great job. but i guess the 400GPH might have something to do with it too. lol
