Hello,

I've been researching a fair amount on my new tank. At the moment there is some bogwood sat in the tank leaching its tannins out and thats it so I have taken the time to research the tank inhabitants during this period. It is a 440L tanks and will be relatively well planted with an overpowered external filter and a couple of heaters in the tank. At the moment the list I have put together is as follows (and in no particular order)

Angelfish x 4
Coolie loach x 6
Upside down catfish x 4 OR bristlenose x 2
Tiger barbs x 6
Clown loach x 5
A selection of snails and shrimp

What are peoples opinions on the stocking levels and the tankmates?

Thanks

Potentially your angelfish won't take kindly to your shrimp, also clown loach don't do well with snails. My shoal bullied my apple snails untill they rolled over and 'gave up' allowing the loach to eat them. So concider it carefully.

Also in a tank this size i would have some more interesting type of catfish, such as 3 or 5 pim pictus cats? Hell, even get a nice pleco aswell. One of the smaller under 8" ones perhaps such as Magnum Plec, Lemon Plec, Peckolita sp, Golden Nugget, Flash....ohh the list is endless.

Your number of tiger barbs i'd up from 6 to atleast 9, as they get quite nippy. Atleast with this many you will have the aggression amongst themselves, rather than pestering your angels or potential other stock.

Thanks for that. Its not the end of the world leaving out the snails and shrimps to be honest, its the plants and fish i'm more interested in.

Cheers for the info.

Just a note on your Kuhli (a.k.a. "coolie") Loaches. make sure your filter intact has some sort of cover so that they can't swim up it and never see the light of day again... Home made just steal some stockings from a lady-friend and tie that around the intake.. not the prettiest thing but you won't find dead rotting Kuhli's in your filter when you clean it out...

They do this because in their natural habitat they swim against currents - so installing a spray bar on your out-take is recommended, you'll see more of your Kuhli around the tank and not finding dead ones in your filter!

Shrimp = Angelfish delicacy
Also, are you getting 2 pairs of angelfish? or just getting 4 and hoping they pair off - because if you don't you could end up with grumpy angels... moody things them lot!

I've never had a problem with snails and clown loaches, but who knows - maybe mine are too busy DIGGING UP MY PLANTS and annoying my BGK!

Good luck with the tank mate, I just re-planted one of my tanks, happy to help you out with a plant list if you're interested.

Hi
I have a 600ltr tank with 2x angels (not grumpy but i think im just lucky) 5x clown loaches and varios other cichlids.I also have 4x upside down catfish but never ever see them unless im gravel vacing and disturb them but my favourites in the tank are my chocolate cichlids, awesome fish.Very peaceful loads of personality an always changing colour.
Greedy little beggars though.
I would recomend them.

Regards
Sean
